Apocalypse Terrain Showcase

CENTRAL REFINERY HUB STATION

O ne of the key terrain pieces in the battle for Cold Steel Ridge was the central refinery hub station. This formed a centrepiece for the board as the train tracks and pipe network all met there. It also allowed us to try a different approach to the hyper detailed terrain we usually make insofar as Apocalypse is all about scale and the broader strokes of battle, and this terrain piece reflects that. It isn't phenomenally detailed but it sets the tone with a graphic style. In essence, the painting does the work as drybrushing picks up the textures of the terrain.

1

We started the refinery by drawing out the building's elevations on 5mm-thick foam card. We cut out these designs using a steel ruler and craft knife before we stuck them together with white PVA glue. We also inserted drawing pins in the ends to provide stability while the glue dried.

2

Using thin card, we gave each surface of the refinery a simple facade. We cut out straight-forward shapes to provide a texture to drybrush against when it was time to paint. When building terrain for Apocalypse, we found that we didn't have to be as detailed as for something of a smaller scale. Big, graphic shapes work well on a large scale and help to define terrain.
