THE ORKIPELAGO
art of the joy of Apocalypse is that it allows you to go a bit-crazy. When tasked with making an Ork board, our resident Hobby Team really outdid themselves. The result was an Ork archipelago complete with an Ork factory, crane, citadel, tellyporta arrays, anti-aircraft guns, squig-sharks, and even a mine-laying anti-grav bulk lifter affectionately known as "the Minepig".
The game itself was organised by one of our four players, who wrote some special rules for the weird and wonderful machines created by Orghamek. It's a lot of fun to come up with rules for the spectacular scenery you can use in your Apocalypse games. Don't worry too much about how balanced and fair they are; just think of them as a reward for all the hard work invested in making the scenery in the first place. After all, when each side has 16,000 points of models at its disposal, anything can happen! Shown below are a few "pre" shots that show off the varied table surface textures present just prior to proper painting.

his sprawling Ork industrial complex has lots of decks and levels for setting up models. It features in the final battle report in the Apocalypse book, counting as an objective. We also came up with special rules for the factory so it churned out Killa Kanz, Dreadnoughts and Stompas during the game. Simple special rules like that one make custom terrain just that much more enjoyable.
The factory was built by gluing blocks of polystyrene foam packaging together. This was then covered in off-cuts of card, pipes and assorted bits. It was spray painted red and drybushed to create a roughly built appearance. Check out the "pre' photos below to see what it looked like before painting.

ith so many pieces of Orky terrain to check out, it's no easy task narrowing down which ones get showcased, but above are a few of the creators' favorites. The first is a large ramshackle communications tower essential for coordinating attacks from orbit as well as transmitting standard battlefield communications (or perhaps it's a handy place to safely store away Weirdboyz until they are needed). Next is a small structure which houses an antiaircraft battery that one lucky Ork gets to fire until he has to go and find some more ammo. Finally, there's the Tellyporta. Orks have an innate understanding of many types of technology, including teleportation – and luckily, their physiques are robust enough to withstand the somewhat-erratic results!
