THE IMPERIAL GUARD HELLHAMMER

hile the Baneblade is better for anchoring a solid defensive line, the Hellhammer is geared towards taking objectives from the enemy. Often your opponents will place objectives in buildings, rocks, woods and other terrain that makes the objective easier to defend. Such features are no defence against a Hellhammer cannon and heavy flamers! The important thing is to keep pressing forwards, so it's often worthwhile to use the Hellhammer's smoke launchers in the first turn to cover your advance, rather than take some longer-ranged shots and risk getting a Drive Damaged result from return fire. The Blind Barrage stratagem is also a great way to make sure the Hellhammer has the best chance possible of reaching its target.
It's also worth giving serious consideration to the gun sponson options available. The Hellhammer has to advance on the enemy for maximum effect, and this will often expose its side armour to enemy fire – by sacrificing your sponsons, you might have a little less bite when you reach the enemy, but you'll have more chance of getting there. Conversely, the Hellhammer has to do maximum damage in a short space of time so that you capture the objective before the enemy can respond. In this case, adding even more heavy flamers might just do the job!
