BUILDING A GRAIL CHAPEL
Following on from the stained glass windows terrain-building article, we take a look at building a Bretonnian Grail chapel, for you Knights of the Realm to defend.

Step One:
Make the base for the shrine rooftop from eight plastic fortress wall section
parapets cut 2" wide. Glue these pieces to an octagon-shaped piece of 1/8"
plasticard with 2" wide sides. From 1/16" plasticard, cut the roof
sides into triangular shapes with 2" wide bases. Using a template for these
pieces will make construction much easier.
Step Two:
Cut the plastic fortress walls into sections wide enough to accommodate the
rooftop. Cut sections of 1/8" hardboard to fill the recesses of the alcoves
and the doorway. Glue textured plastic sheeting (available at most model train
supply stores) to sheets of foamcore and glue the pieces inside the doorway
and alcoves to make the backing. Glue the doors from the plastic fortress inside
the doorway.

Step Three:
Assemble the rooftop and chapel base and then glue the complete chapel to a
hardboard/foam hill base with Liquid Nails. Make sure that the sides of your
hill go high enough to reach the bottoms of the alcoves. Test fit everything
before you glue anything down. Use Liquid Nails to fill any gaps between the
hill and chapel. Smooth out the joins with a popsicle stick or something similar
(it's really hard to get Liquid Nails off of your fingers).
Step Four:
Add details like a cone marker from the Talisman game and a Grail from a Grail
Knight helmet for the roof cap. Use basswood strips as trim around the front
door, parapet, and rooftop. The statues in the alcoves are archive Monk models,
and the gargoyles are bits from the smoke stack of the Empire Steam Tank and
the Sisters of Battle shrine. Additional bits include plastic Bretonnian shields
and Mordheim building accessories. For a more realistic look, you can also add
stained glass to the alcoves (make
windows behind the statues) or add small windows to the doors. When the detail
work is complete, glue down large boulders on the hillside with Liquid Nails
and texture the base with sand. Prime the entire structure with Chaos Black
Spray Primer, and the shrine is ready to be painted.
