The Fate of Athel Loren
PREPARING FOR
THE CAMPAIGN WEEKEND

Hobby Specialist, Joe Sturge returns to share his insights of the new Wood Elves as he builds an army to take on all-comers at the Rise of Kingdoms Campaign Weekend: The Fate of Athel Loren.

A Wood Elves' Spellsinger

Joe: I find that the most interesting part of designing an army for any campaign weekend is adapting to whatever restrictions happen to be in force. In this case though, I don't have to make too many modifications to my army, and even get some more points to play with!

The campaign weekend actually uses two different army lists: one at 2,000 points and one at 500. In some games these combine, while in others they are used on their own, and in yet more, they even make a 1,000 point Warhammer Doubles force. The primary restrictions limit the army to only 100 points of magic items/spites and 6 levels of magic, which suits me just fine – the Elves are so fragile and expensive that every point spent on magic items means fewer pointed-eared chaps to actually do the fighting.

WOOD ELVES ARE:
FRAGILE!

The biggest threats to your army are those which deal damage from a distance. Concentrate on these first! War machines, enemy magic users and missile troops are the first target for my fast units, magic and firepower.

Being an obsessive-compulsive control freak at heart, I think the Wood Elves appeal to me as an army that does precisely what I want it to do, when I want it done. Some people like an element of randomness in their armies (Orcs & Goblins and Beastmen players are notorious for this), but I am most certainly not one of them. Likewise, whichever army I happen to be playing, the core of the army stays the same given any scenario, enemy, opponent, come rain or shine. For the Wood Elves this takes the form of the Dryads, Glade Guard and battle standard bearer, with the rest of the army added to taste.
