Before I began these conversions, I planned how I was going to make them, and work out what bits I’d need. With a list of components I needed, I set upon the plastic sprues with clippers and files. As I looked at the Terminator sprues, I quickly realised that I had to do relatively little work to convert them into Chaos Terminators.
The first stage was to remove or deface much of the Imperial heraldry and iconography that adorns the Terminator bodies, shoulders and weapons. I used a file to remove many of the icons while at the same time cleaning up any mould lines. Any icons that could not easily be removed with a file were either heavily slashed and gouged with a hobby knife, or pot-marked with a pin-vice – representing bullet and shrapnel damage that had not been repaired.

When looking at pictures of Chaos Terminators for reference, I found that the most powerful part of their imagery was their great trophy racks rising above their shoulders, further increasing their already considerable height. I decided to use the metal trophy racks from the current Chaos Space Marine Terminators (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it), which meant I had to carve slots into the shoulders of the plastic Terminators into which I could attach the racks.
The slots were fashioned with a file and a hobby knife. It was important to take a bit of time during this stage, since I not only had to try to keep the slots even, but had to make sure that they curved in the same direction as the underside of the trophy racks – the closer these lines matched, the better the fit would be when gluing the components together. Having finished cutting the slots into each of the five Terminator bodies, I glued the trophy racks in place with superglue and left them to dry.

The third and final part of the conversion was to take these now undoubtedly Chaos Terminators and turn them in the direction of Khorne. This was easily achieved with the aid of a Khorne Berzerker sprue, from which I garnered replacement heads, close combat weapons and a variety of Khorne symbols, icons and sigils. The heads provided the most identifiable link to Khorne and so I used the four helmeted heads for the regular Marines, and the one un-helmed head as the unit’s Aspiring Champion.
Before assembly, I carefully removed the power fists from their arms at the writs, and reattached the gauntleted hands of the Khorne Berzerkers, each wielding a suitably bloodthirsty weapon. At this stage, I had to cheat. Since there are five Terminators per sprue, and only four Khorne Berzerkers, I was short of one weapon. Fortunately, being an avid Chaos player and a collector of a World Eaters army, I had plenty of spare weapons lying about in my bits box. Finally, I stuck as many Khorne symbols as possible to the new Terminators, covering old Imperial icons and filling blank areas of the miniatures.
A quick spray undercoat of Chaos Black and I was ready to paint them in the colours of my World Eaters army.
