Guardsmen with and without bayonets fixedOwen: I really liked the new Cadian plastics that came out recently and decided to do an army based on the Drop Troops doctrine. Extra equipment would be needed, such as backpacks and re-breathers. Here's how I went about it...

I built a basic Cadian trooper as normal, converting hands, weapons, heads etc with whatever I could find. I then used the backpack from the Catachan Captain, cutting off the sword and the connectors for his power fist, and then glued this onto the back. Next I got various grenades, pouches, canteens etc and glued them around the waist. I tried to fill this out as much as possible so it looked like the model was carrying a lot of equipment. The next stage was to glue a combat knife holder to the Catachan backpack where the Captain's sword used to be. I got these from the Cadian Infantry sprue (they are attached to the water canteen). Depending on whether the model had a bayonet or not I glued on either an empty knife holder or one with a knife in.

Re-breather and face maskNext up was adding the re-breather (the bit which always seems to take the longest). I used a Ravenwing Flamer arm, and cut off the canister (any flamer from a Catachan Infantry sprue or a Space Marine Command sprue will do the job here). I filed down one side and glued it under the Catachan backpack. Next I drilled a hole in the top, at this stage I also drilled a hole under the chin of the trooper. Next I got some 36 gauge guitar string and, using some tweezers and pliers twisted and cajoled the string into both of the holes I'd drilled. I added some Green Stuff over the chinstrap and mouth up to the nose of the model to represent the breather. Finally, I always make sure that any air pipes (the guitar string) go under arms, as I've glued a couple of models together with it over the arm and it looks really awkward and cumbersome.
