BUILDING ARMATURES
Just as our skeletal system supports our fleshy bodies, armatures can form a basic support structure under sculpted putty. If you are sculpting an arm, leg, or tentacle from scratch, it is a good idea to build an armature before any actual sculpting takes place. You can make armatures out of anything. Paper clips are good for appendages, while hunks of wood, rocks, mouldable wire mesh (found at art stores), and foamcore are better suited for adding bulk to larger projects. Here's how to build a simple armature for tentacles.

Drill holes for the armature. Make sure these holes are large enough to accommodate your armature material. |
Shape the armature with a pair of pliers. This structure will be the basic shape for the putty. |
