Caroline:
I wanted to recreate the powerful moment in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring when Gandalf leaps from the top of the Tower of Orthanc and onto the back of Gwaihir.

I started by putting together the Gwaihir model and gluing the wings on. I then took the Gandalf model and used clippers to chop off his bottom half at the waist which I then discarded.

Next I clipped off his staff and used a fine file to remove any metal left by the clippers. As the Gandalf model didn't sit very well on the eagle, I filed down Gandalf's underside as well, so that it would fit nicely on Gwaihir. The right arm was clipped off and repositioned so that it looked as though he is gripping onto Gwaihir's feathers. I then pinned Gandalf onto Gwaihir's back.

With Gandalf in position I took out the Green Stuff and began to model on the lower portion of his legs. This was surpriningly easy to do as, once you build up a roughly triangular body shape, you can add the cloak, making sure that the folds all match up with any on the top half.

Lastly I repositioaned the hole in Gwaihir's underside for the flying base so that the model would be at an angle, creating a more dynamic pose.
