Mark:
This model was actually an entry into the UK Hobby Support department's painting
and modelling competition. However it was really inspired by the fact that I wanted
to expand my 2,000 point Undead Vampire Counts army to 3,000 points, and thus
felt that the luxury of a Vampire Lord, ‘Lucius Balefist’, mounted
on a terror-causing Winged Nightmare was merited (and I also wanted to
use him to smite a Steam Tank that had recently been a thorn in my side!). This
Nightmare would be Gorechild, once a proud Griffon but now something much more
sinister… a fitting mount for such a mighty warrior.
I always find that simple conversions are the best, not being a master in the use of Green Stuff, and there are some simple tricks that you can use to make a really bespoke model. So, with the following list in mind, I began my creation:
Head swaps
Weapon swaps
Nifty paint job
Put a lot of effort in the base
Banners if appropriate
With these rules in mind I set about looking through the webstore's component list. The Warhammer 40,000 Chaos Space Marine Raptor head was perfect and my mounted Lord had to have a lance (min. Str 7 on the charge!). I glued the lance in a shouldered pose with his cloak at 180° to give a feel of movement to the figure… just leaping into the air. The Griffon's head felt and looked pretty good too, not too big. I cut down the neck of the Nightmare's body quite a bit but left some of the veins and tendons to make it look like the head had been sewn on!

The
base, I think, really sets off the model. So steeped in dark Necromantic magic
is he that the dead are drawn from the ground wherever he lands! The Zombies
were clipped down and then filed smooth to fit flush to the base.
The paint job was very simple, the Nightmare very dark (Chaos Black with a mix of Codex Grey and Fortress Grey drybrush), with the wings and muscle blocks painted Dwarf Flesh with a Red Ink/Flesh Wash over the top. Lucius was, however, a complete contrast with bright silver and gold armour, a red helm and dragon shoulder guard. The banner was a piece of paper painted Chaos Black with two Bretonnian red dragon decals added. Overall I was quite pleased… It won the competition and did indeed turn the Steam Tank into scrap (steam cooked crew for Gorechild to eat… very nice).
