Collecting Dwarfs
A VETERAN PLAYER'S TALE

Page: 1|2|3|4|5

FINALLY, THE ARMY!

Wow, that's a lot of Dwarfs; thousands of points, in fact! Although this article is about collecting Dwarfs and not army building, I would like to give you some idea of what I would want in a 2,000-point army, because I obviously can't fit all of these collected units in an army of that size. Let's start with the easy stuff, my two Rare unit choices. If I was playing against an unknown army, then I think I would have to go with the Flame Cannon and a Gyrocopter. I love forcing Panic tests with the Flame Cannon, and I plan to have lots of shooting, and the Gyrocopter is great for getting in a few extra rounds of missile fire. For Special unit choices, my generic Dwarf throng will have to have Hammerers, Ironbreakers, a Cannon, and two Bolt Throwers. Stubborn Dwarfs rule, especially when the enemy has no Fear-causing troops to spoil my plans, and I can never go into battle without my good-luck Ironbreakers. Cannons always rock, and a Bolt Thrower with an Engineer will easily kill its worth in points value (60 points) with more accurate shooting. Oh no, I forgot my must-have Slayers! Okay, I might have to put more thought into the Special choices. No time now, though — onto the Core! As mentioned earlier, two units of Dwarf Warriors with a single unit of Longbeards to keep them honest will form the centre of my army. A few medium-sized units of Thunderers will be used to whittle the enemy down to size, and a small unit of Rangers will be needed to help the Gyrocopter slow the advance of the enemy so I can pour more missile fire into them. If I have any extra points, (which I probably don't,) I would like to lead the army with a Lord on Shieldbearers. If that won't fit, a Thane on an Oathstone or a Dragon Slayer would fit the bill. My Master Engineer will be deployed as a basic Engineer until he is needed against a specific foe. There is no way that my army standard bearer is going to fit in the army, but I'm going to say he does until I get around to hammering out a final army list.

The Dwarfs wage an aeons long war with the High Elves

Hmm, to fit all of these units into a 2,000-point army will take more magic than can be found in even the most powerful master rune. Oh well; if I can't squeeze them all in, I'll just have to make some new friends with 3,000-point armies. The scariest part is that there are still so many more Dwarfs (Quarrellers, new Thunderers, more Characters, etc.) I want to add to my collection.

Grimnir, why do you mock me with choices like these?!! I guess that's why there's a difference between collecting and army building. With all of these awesome new Dwarf miniatures, my guess is that more players are going to fall into the collecting camp like I did. Hey, it's always good to have options, right?
