MAKING A SET OF BARRICADES

Building a set of barricades is really very simple. They look great on the tabletop and can make for some interesting tactical options in scenarios. On this page, you can discover how to make some quality barricades of your own. Vary any bits (shields, etc) to match whatever Good or Evil theme you like.

1

First off, you need to make a base. Hardboard (MDF Masonite) is ideal and preferred. However, you could use foamcore or thick plasticard instead. Cut out a few bases about 6" long by 1"-2" wide. This size is nice because the barricades can be arranged several different ways to be as flexible and useful as possible. Bevel the edges of your base with a sander.

2

Add some weight and substance to the barricade with modelling clay. Apply the material over the entire length of the barricade, so that it is now about 3/4" high in places.

3

Grab a handful of stones from the driveway/garden/car park and jam them into the modelling clay while it is still soft. Use a variety of large and small stones, but don't fill up the entire barricade – leave some gaps.

Locate some balsa wood or twigs of varying thickness. Break these into smaller lengths and jam them into the modelling clay at odd angles. No need to do much planning; just go with the flow here. After all, the more erratic, the better.

5

In addition to wood and stone, dig up a few extra shields and add them to the mix. Here, we wedged in a Moria Goblin shield between some rocks to reinforce the barricade.

6

Secure the rocks, wood, and shields in place with superglue. Set the barricade aside and let the glue dry and the modelling clay harden. While you are waiting, move right along and make another barricade. In no time, you'll have a whole pile of 'em!

7

Finish construction by gluing fine sand around the edges of the barricade. There's no need to be exact here, and some of the exposed modelling clay on top of the barricade can be left unsanded.

8

Last but not least, add some colour. Dark, earthy tones suit the job best. After painting is complete, a diluted green/brown wash applied liberally can really complete the piece.
