Before These Walls
FORTRESS COMPONENTS

At the heart of each major settlement lies the fortress. A huge bastion from where the nobles of the region plot and scheme to overthrow one another.

MAKING FORTRESS COMPONENTS

Castles vary tremendously in both design and appearance and although you may want to make your castle look as authentic as possible, it might be best to keep it simple to begin with. A fortress made up of several wall sections and towers is all you need for your first few battles as the sections can easily be rearranged to make different shaped castles. It will also make the model a lot easier to store and you can always add further sections later.

A selection of inspirational books

It is a good idea to look through books on castles, especially well illustrated children's books, to get ideas and inspiration for your castle. Things to look out for include the shapes of gates, battlements, towers and roofs; the colour of stonework; siege towers, and any other interesting details which can be modelled.

By following the links below, we'll give you some tips and ideas on how to go about making your own fortress components. So pull your hobby knife out, clear a space for modelling, and get started with the basics by making yourself a castle wall section!
