GETTING STARTED WITH THE EMPIRE
STEP 5 - PAINT YOUR ARMY
Okay, now you've assembled some of your Empire models, and maybe you've played a few games with them. Still, your Warhammer opponents are telling you that unpainted miniatures give you bad luck with the dice. We cannot confirm this belief, but we do know that painted models make for more realistic and fun games of Warhammer. Time to get painting!
The step-by-step painting guide below walks you through a relatively simple paint scheme for your Empire State Troops that uses 17 colours. Follow the instructions for each step and check out all the imagery for reference as you go. Though it takes a bit of practice, you'll be surprised how quickly your painting skills develop, especially with the guidance of other hobbyists. Before you know it, you'll be cranking out painted miniatures that you'll be proud to field in your Empire army.
| 1 | In general, it's a lot easier to paint a model like this one with its shield off so it doesn't block other details. After priming the model white, basecoat the trousers and shirt with Skull White. Paint the other half of the trousers and shirt with Blood Red. For the face and hands, basecoat them with Dwarf Flesh. Hit the feather and seals with Bleached Bone. |
| 2 | Basecoat the breastplate, helmet, and sword with Chainmail. Paint the sword handle, dagger trim, and belt buckle with Shining Gold. Clean your brushes and change your water before you move on — metallic paints leave small metal flecks in both that will wreck your standard colors. Basecoat the hair and boots with Chaos Black, while the belts, straps, hour glass, and dagger scabbard get Scorched Brown. |
| 3 | Shade the metal and white areas with Black Ink; the feather, hands, and face with Flesh Wash; and the red areas with Red Ink. |
| 4 | Time
to highlight this guy. Highlight the red areas with a mix of Blood Red
and Blazing Orange, the skin with Elf Flesh, the hourglass with Enchanted
Blue, and the metallic areas with Mithril Silver. Paint the eyes Skull
White, give them pupils of Chaos Black, and find the tip of the feather
with Chaos Black while you have it on hand. |
| 5 | Finish up by highlighting the skin with a mix of Skull White and Elf Flesh, the boots and feather tip with Codex Grey, his teeth with Bleached Bone, the hourglass with Ice Blue, and all the brown areas with a mix of Bleached Bone and Scorched Brown. For the shield, basecoat it with Chaos Black and then paint the skull
and rivets with Shining Gold. Paint the gold areas with Flesh Wash to
give them shadows and highlight the black areas with Codex Grey. |
