Stood Against the Storm
THE ARMY OF MIDDENLAND

The followers of Ulric, the patron saint of soldiers, stand ready to defend the Empire from the corrupt host that descends from the north. Do you have the courage to heed the call of the White Wolf?

Valten, exalted of Sigmar
Valten - Exalted of Sigmar.

The Army of Middenland is a far cry from your standard Empire army. With four entirely new units, three new character choices, a lengthy list of special rules, and two pages of new Magic Items to choose from, your Empire army will never be the same!

Fighting, not shooting is the emphasis in a Middenland force. Almost all missile troops have been removed, and the Hellblaster is nowhere to be found! Joining the fray, however, are the elite Teutogen Guard, the Warriors of Ulric, Hunting Hounds, and the near-mad Wolf-Kin of Ulric.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE ARMY LIST?

Ar-Ulric

Brien Dulaney: During the upcoming Storm there will be all sorts of new armies and old ones coming together to decide the fate of the Old and New Worlds. Out of all of these choices, I decided to go with the Army of Middenland. Why is that, you ask? Ever read Hammers of Ulric from the Black Library? That book etches out the perfect image of Middenland warriors that I could not resist.

When I think of Middenlanders – more importantly Knights of the White Wolf – I also think of the characters from the movie The 13th Warrior. They are giants among men that drink and fight for fun! That is why I chose this army. It has tremendous potential for characters and great conversions.

Okay, I love the background, but what about the actual army? For starters, the list has many of the benefits from the Cult of Ulric and some from the Empire army list as well. The ability to have an additional unit in your army that is Inner Circle is a huge plus. Another advantage of the army is being able to take the Teutogen Guard and the Greatswords! Two Stubborn units with great armour and a mean punch can't hurt! To offset the expensive Teutogen Guard and Greatswords, I get to take my Warriors of Ulric at their dirt-cheap points cost as well. Great troops and cheap troops; what a nice combination!

Ken Kennedy: With the addition of the new Wolf-Kin and the ability to take as many units of Huntsmen as you want, it is now conceivable to make a Middenland army entirely out of Skirmishers and Cavalry. Talk about a manoeuvreable army! Sure, Empire Cavalry can't charge in Lance Formation, but they can get two S4 Cavalry units that have full-plate armour and are reasonably priced as Core selections. The Wolf-Kin are the toughest Skirmishers I can think of. Not only can they be armoured up and given great weapons, but they will hold firm since they are Stubborn.

Of course, I would never go with an all-Cavalry and Skirmisher army when I can augment this highly mobile force with a block of Greatswords, a block of Teutogen Guard, and a few units of sneaky Hunting Hounds. Not into hounds? Field a few units of Warriors of Ulric. You can get a small unit of hard-hitting (great weapons) flankers for a mere 60 points.

HOW DO YOU PLAN ON USING THESE TROOPS?

Ken Kennedy: Unlimited Huntsmen and strong Cavalry allow a Middenlander player to field a guerilla-tactics force with a strong punch. Huntsmen are Skirmishers and Scouts, and can be fielded in units as small as five (for as low as 50 points). I can use a few units of these troops on each flank to slow the advance or maneuver the enemy into desired positions (either exposing their flank or blocking other enemy units). If my opponent doesn't take the bait, I can either snipe away or get behind their line for even more mayhem.

Hunting Hounds, being Fast Cavalry, can be used in a similar way; the big difference being that a unit of three dogs is all it takes to disrupt your enemy's rank bonus! They can also be used to screen your valuable units, sack vulnerable war machines, and/or take board sections as the game draws to a close.

My 2,000-point Middenlanders army can have up to four Stubborn units if I use both of my Rare choices on Wolf-Kin. I probably won't need that many, but regardless, Stubborn troops are amazing. I plan to use my Middenland Stubborn troops to hold powerful (and valuable!) enemy units in place long enough for a unit (or two) of Cavalry to slam into their side. Pretty basic stuff, really.
