Stood Against the Storm

The Army of Middenland on the march

Brien Dulaney has put together a couple of army lists using the rules for the Army of Middenland from the Storm of Chaos book. The first is a 1,000-point scouting party and the second a 2,000-point force of these stalwart defenders.

This list is the initial 1,000-point army I chose to start with for my glorious Army of Middenland. I intend to crush my enemies with this force! However, the list seems rather small with only four total units and three characters. Then again, 1,000-point games tend to go rather quickly, and units with mobility or depth tend to live longer.

The Seneschal with the Talisman of Protection joins the Swordsmen regiment to make a block of 20 troops. With the Swordsmen's Weapon Skill of 4 and the Seneschal in the front rank, I will designate this unit as the centre point of any attack I make. With a 4+ Armour Save in close combat, this combination will prove to be a pain to any enemy unit by holding the foe in place for some time. Plus there are the bonuses of the Crush the Weak and Commanding Presence special rules. For those who don't know yet, Crush the Weak causes the Seneschal and the unit he is with to Hate any enemy models with Leadership 6 or less. This ability will prove useful against the various foes I may face. Commanding Presence allows the Seneschal and his unit to be immune to Panic, which is very useful in this small-scale list.

Sadly, I did not give the Halberdiers anything special. However, these doughty lads will be hitting at Strength 4 with the halberds. This advantage will be a good counterbalance for those enemy units with higher Toughness and armour. I honestly do not expect this unit to last by itself in any good engagement. However, I have the following two cavalry units to support them.

I plan to run my two cavalry units as strong flank attackers. I put the other Seneschal in the first unit of Knights, which gives the unit a total of seven Knights in that unit with a full command group. I then put a Priest of Ulric in the other unit of Knights. Both units will now have the Crush the Weak ability, while the first unit will also have Commanding Presence. I would not use these units by themselves, as doing so would be risking a loss in combat resolution in large units. I plan to use the Knights as strong flankers or have them work together to take out units. Initially, it would be nice to have one unit of Knights support one infantry unit, but again, this list represents a small army with only four units. I expect a lot of flanking manoeuvres from my opponents. Hopefully, with this army list, I will be able to pick my fights!

Again, this list is just a rough layout for the beginning of Storm of Chaos. I am sure I will end up changing it as the battles progress. This list is very specialised with hard-hitting troops with good armour. Naturally, I would abandon the many units of cavalry in this list if I were defending or fighting in a siege, as I suspect I will be many times this summer!

The center and strongest point of my army is the cavalry. With a 2+ armour Save, and at least Strength 4 (higher on the charge), Knights of the White Wolf are right at home in any good army of Middenland. I have two larger units of cavalry in the army. One is the unit of Inner Circle Knights of the White Wolf. Inner Circle means I paid an additional point value to increase the Knights' base Strength to 4. This enhancement makes them Strength 5 with the hammers. Any good Warhammer player can respect the effect Strength 5 has on armour. I know I will need this when I engage the Hordes of Archaon on the open fields. Then again I added the Elector Count of Middenheim, Boris Todbringer, to this unit. He has a Runefang so he auto-wounds. He also has the Talisman of Ulric which gives him and his unit Magic Resistance 1, and he automatically regenerates all of his Wounds each turn! Wouldn't that annoy you if you were up against him? Plus, at Weapon Skill 6 and Strength and Toughness 4, he is a relative bargain when it comes to points.

The other large unit is made of Knights Panther. Most people would ask why in the world I would have them in this army. Firstly, you are allowed one unit of them. Secondly, they are cheaper than the other Knights. Thirdly, they fit with the story! They were mentioned in the Hammers of Ulric novel. There is a detachment of Knights Panther that is stationed in Middenheim. Plus, the Knights allow for a little variation in the look of the army.

I have one other cavalry unit of six Knights of the White Wolf who are also accompanied by a Warrior Priest of Ulric. I love what he brings to the table with the units he joins. Like my smaller army list, this unit is used for support and flanking.

Next, in my infantry, I have a 20-man block of Greatswords. For the points, I couldn't opt to go with the Teutogen Guard in its place due to the Strength values and points per model. Otherwise, I would have to make the Teutogen Guard Inner Circle as well. I love both units for their Stubborn special ability.

I also have a unit of Warriors of Ulric. These guys are great, especially for the low base point cost of 4 points per model. I am running them with light armor, shields, and hammers. In this unit, I am adding a Seneschal of the White Wolf on foot with the Heart of Middenheim which grants him a 5+ Ward Save and +1 to his Weapon Skill. I have also added a Warrior Priest of Ulric with the Silver Horn. I love the Silver Horn: it's great for chewing up my opponent's pesky Dispel dice and its Bound Spell automatically rallies all friendly troops. With the majority of my army at Leadership 8, the Silver Horn can prove very useful.

Lastly, in the infantry, I have a 10-man block of Halberdiers. Once again, this unit is a supporting one that can hit at Strength 4. Naturally, I would not use them as a frontal assault unit.

My last addition to this list is a Mortar. I know most would take a Cannon. I chose the Mortar for taking out war machine crews and things like Marauders, Goblins, Skaven, and any missile-fire troops my enemies might field.
