The Son of Gondor
PAINTING BOROMIR

There are a number of different models of this character, and the 'Eavy Metal team have painted them all. This article describes the different techniques that expert painters have used to paint Boromir, the son of Gondor.

ASSEMBLING THE MODEL

Undercoat the model with Chaos Black spray paint. Cover over any sections that the spray missed with a thin coat of straight Chaos Black.

PAINTING THE MODEL

1

Since the cloak is already undercoated with black, simply highlight it with an even mix of Bubonic Brown and Chaos Black on the creases. Then, thin down Brown Ink and apply it as a wash over the entire coat. Stipple a 4:1 mix of Scorched Brown to Bleached Bone along the bottom of his cloak to suggest mud splashes. To stipple, wipe off most of the paint from the bristles and dab the bristles on the area. Finally, paint the trim on his coat with an even mix of Chaos Black and Bleached Bone.

Basecoat Boromir's robe (under his cloak) with Red Gore. Highlight with an even mix of Bronzed Flesh and Red Gore. Wash the robe with an even mix of Red Ink and Black Ink. Paint the trim on the robe's sleeves with a pattern of Shining Gold.

3

For the metal areas, basecoat them with Chainmail. Then, apply an equal mix of Black Ink and Brown Ink as a wash over these areas. Finish with a highlight of Mithril Silver.

4

Basecoat all the leather areas with Scorched Brown. Next, highlight them with a 4:1 mix of Scorched Brown and Bleached Bone. Lastly, apply an even mix of Black Ink and Brown Ink.

5

Paint the shield with an even mix of Red Gore and Scorched Brown. Highlight by adding a small drop of Dark Flesh to the mix and stipple it onto the shield.

FINE DETAILS

6

Basecoat Boromir's face with Dwarf Flesh. Mix this color with Elf Flesh and highlight prominent areas like the nose, cheekbones, and upper lip. Then, highlight with straight Elf Flesh. Thin down some Brown Ink with a lot of water and apply it to the face. After that dries, finish by re-highlighting the face with Elf Flesh.

For Boromir's hair, basecoat with and even mix of Scorched Brown and Chaos Black. Apply highlights by running your brush down the length of the hair with Scorched Brown followed by Bestial Brown. Lastly, mix in Dwarf Flesh with the Bestial Brown and paint the ends of the strands.

8

Basecoat Boromir's gloves with Scorched Brown. Next, highlight by adding in Dark Flesh and then Bleached Bone. Finish with a watered-down Brown Ink wash.

FINISHING TOUCHES

9

For the horn, basecoat with Bleached Bone and highlight with Skull White. Retouch the mouthpiece of the horn with Chaos Black followed by Mithril Silver. Paint the rim of the horn with Tin Bitz. Highlight this area with Shining Gold. Finish the highlight by mixing in some Mithril Silver. Once dry, hit the metal with an even, watered-down wash of Green Ink and Brown Ink.
