I Make the Earth Shake
TAKING THE WAR MÛMAK OF HARAD ONE STEP FURTHER

MAHÛD CHIEFTAINS

The deadly hunters known as Mahûd Chieftains are the true masters of the Mûmak. When battle calls, they ride just behind the Mûmak's head with reins in hand, coaxing the war-beast to trample all in it's path. Modeling one of these warriors is just too cool, so let's get going!

Wire and Pliers
Bending wire
Hook

Start off by making the Mûmak's reins. Bend a thin-gauge wire with pliers to form a small hook. Clip off this hook, then make a duplicate as best you can.

Next, get some 32-gauge, cloth-wrapped wire. This stuff is available at any floral shop or craft store. It's a bit easier to use compared to plain old string, as it holds its shape and can be bent and twisted as you see fit. Twist this wire around the hook like the picture above. Do not cut the unattached end of the wire off just yet.

Making a hole in the ear
Adding rein

Apply a small drop of glue to secure the wire in place. Put this item aside and grab the Mûmak's ears. Drill a hole in the ear just below the top ridge. Fit the hook into the hole like an earring.

Clipping off spear
Cleaning up the hand

With the reins attached to the ears, it's time to convert the Mahûd Chieftain. You can use the Haradrim Chieftain that comes with the Mûmak for this purpose. Start by clipping the spear from his hand and then carve the spear remnants from the left hand with a hobby knife. Watch your fingers!

Drilling hole in hand

Drilling the feet

Grab a pin vice and drill a hole straight through the Mahûd's right hand. The hole should be wide enough for whatever gauge wire you've found to make a handle for the reins (see below). Next, clip the bit attached to both feet of the Mahûd and drill a small hole for a pin in his right or left foot.

Making the handles

Add a pin to the foot and then glue the Mahûd in place above the Mûmak's head. Make sure to consider where the howdah will sit when gluing this model down. Next, clip two small shafts of wire to serve as handles and wrap them with cloth wire. Firmly cement the cloth wire in place with a drop of glue.

Threading the reins through the Mahud's hand
Gluing the reins to the handle

Cut the two extending cloth wires and twist them together as shown above. Now, glue the ears to the Mûmak and wait for them to dry. Pull the reins so that they connect to the Mahûd's hands. Clip the cloth wire off at this point and detach the reins from the Mûmak's ear. Attach the handle to the reins by twisting the wire together a bit more and add in a drop of superglue.

Finished Mahud Chieftain

Glue the finished reins into the hands of the Mahûd, and you're done. Be patient and constantly test fit the reins as you go. The effort is well worth it – Mahûd Chieftains look awesome atop the Mûmak!
