Corsairs of Umbar
PAINTING THE WARRIORS OF THE SOUTH

The Corsairs of Umbar are ruthless raiders possessed of a savagery more commonly associated with Orcs rather than Men. Fortunately for the seafaring folk of Middle-earth, Corsair attacks are generally as brief as they are vicious, for the renegades of Umbar have little stomach for prolonged battle on land and will gladly scramble back to their ships once they have stolen enough plunder. Below, you will find a step-by-step guide for painting a Corsair of Umbar. Start out by undercoating your model with Chaos Black, let it dry, and then follow the instructions below.

1

First start out by painting the face, hands and any other bits of skin with Tanned Flesh. Then paint the undershirt, which in this particular model only shows the sleeves with Necron Abyss.

2

Next paint the legs and over tunic with Liche Purple, then paint the sash around the Corsairs waist with Snakebite Leather, and the leather straps and pouches with Dark Flesh. Now high light the undershirt arms with a highlight of Mordian Blue and the any skin with Dwarf Flesh.

3

Now leaving the black undercoat for the boots add a highlight of a 1:1 mixture of Chaos Black and Shadow Grey. Highlight the Undershirt arms with Ultramarines Blue, and the legs/tunic with Hormagaunt Purple. Next highlight the waist sash with Snakebite Leather and Bleached Bone, the leather straps with Vermin Brown and the skin highlight with Elf Flesh. Lastly Paint the spear shaft with Bestial Brown and the Corsair's hair with Scorched Brown.

4

Next add an additional highlight to the boots using a 2:1 mix of Shadow Grey and Space Wolves Grey. Highlight the undershirt arms with a 2:1 mix of Ultramarines Blue and Space Wolves Grey and the legs /tunic with a 2:1 mix of Hormagaunt Purple and Bleached Bone. Highlight the skin areas with a 1;1 mix of Elf Flesh and Skull White. Then Highlight the spear shaft with straight Vermin Brown. You can then highlight the sheathes with a 1:1 mix of Calthan Brown and Bleached Bone, the leather straps with a 1:1 mix of Vermin Brown and Bleached Bone, and the waist sash with straight Bleached Bone. Then highlight the Hair with a 1:1 mix of Scorched Brown and Bleached Bone. Finally using some thinned down Skull White paint the whites of the eyes on the model.

It's always a good idea to save the parts you want to paint metallic until after you have painted most everything else because the metallic paint will leave flecks of metal in the water pot you use to clean brushes. Alternately you can use a separate water pot just for metallic paint. For this step paint the spear head, gauntlets, dagger handles and buckle with Chainmail. And paint the sheath tips, cross guard and pommel of the daggers Shining Gold.

6

Paint all the part painted with Chainmail with a watered down coat of Blank Ink, and all the parts painted Shining Gold with a watered down coat of Chestnut ink.

7

Next highlight the Chainmail with Mithril Silver and the Shining Gold with Burnished Gold.

8

Lastly, using Chaos Black and a Fine Detail Brush to paint pupils in each eye. Then if you so choose you can very carefully paint a tattoo with Chaos Black on the face of the Corsair.
