The Heralds of Darkness are legion, fearsome beings whose existence is a blight upon the natural world. Some, like the bloated spider-demon Shelob, are remnants of a time when Sauron was but a shadow of a greater, more destructive evil. Others, the Ringwraiths and Barrow-wights among them, are the lasting legacy of Sauron's war upon Elves and Men alike. All are capable of sowing great sorrow in the world, their touch a thing of malice and corruption. Chief of all these ruined creatures is Sauron the deceiver, Lord of the Rings. It is his will that guides and manipulates these lesser terrors to achieve his own end - the complete and total domination of the world and the subjugation of all who live there.
"It is a name of ancient malice. A malice which covered Middle-earth in darkness for more than an Age."
- Gandalf the Grey at Bag End.
