Horizontal Rule

One of the Ent's special rules involves pulling up rocks from the earth and chucking them at the enemy (at Strength 10, no less). I wanted to model at least one of my Ents in such a fashion, as both Roothu and Thujaleaf were busy crushing their enemies up close. That left Hopseed as the lucky rock lobber. The first step was to find a suitable stone. Lots of the ones I initially picked up from the end of my driveway ended up being way too big. To help my brain calculate scale, I had to drag an Ent arm outside along with me for comparison. Satisfied with my geological find, I trotted back to my desk to begin in earnest.

To start off, I realised I needed at least the body of Hopseed assembled and glued to a base so I could get the arm poses correct later. I decided to leave the legs as they were – no bending or posing involved. I simply glued 'em on, filled the gap with some Green Stuff, and set the Ent aside to dry. In the meantime, I looked at my pile of arms and began fiddling with the rock I'd chosen. Two arms stood out immediately. I bent the right arm into a cupping pose and then attached it to the body. I glued the stone into the palm and bent a few of the fingers to grasp it. Next, I bent a second arm to grab the stone from above, glued it in place, and once more tweaked the fingers so they fit around the stone. To finish the stone-grabbing arm posing, I sculpted two quick "thumbs" and then filled the gaps left by the current pose of the arms with Green Stuff.

The head came after the arms. I chose the skinnier of the two choices and set out to distinguish Hopseed from the others with only minor (yet effective) conversion work. Seeing as I had a pile of arms and branches, I decided to stick them on the head. It was just a matter of clipping the bits down to a proper size, gluing them down, and sculpting the joins. The result was a funky, twiggy head. Pleased with this development, I began adding extra twigs to the shoulder joints and upper back. After adding the two back branches and some base details, Hopseed was all set for the painting table.
