ORC WYVERN

By Nick Bayton

Orc Wyvern, by Nick Bayton

MODELLING

When I saw the awesome new High Elf Dragon kit I was eager to have a go at making one, but being an Orcs & Goblins player I wanted to make it fit into my army instead. Seeing as I had yet to build a Warboss on a Wyvern, this seemed like a fitting challenge!

In Warhammer, a Wyvern differs from a Dragon, as they are typically smaller with no front legs and a barbed sting at the end of their tail. To represent this, I cut a large section from the Dragon's neck out, removing the very Elven looking saddle. I then attached the main neck piece onto the body using Green Stuff to blend it together, and cut off the very end to make the neck look shorter and more muscular. I used the head and stinging tail from the metal Wyvern and blended them together with the plastic components with Green Stuff. I left the frong legs out and used Green Stuff to create the impression of large muscles where the legs should be.

The orc warboss riding the wyvern is the metal wyvern rider from the wyvern box set, with a head swap from the plastic orc warboss box.

PAINTING

I wanted to paint the Wyvern with an earthy, drab appearance, so used Knarloc Green for the skin and Gretchin Green for the wings, with Dheneb Stone mixed in to highlight both. The scales were painted Dark Angels Green and then highlighted with a 50:50 mix of Skull White. The armour was painted Chaos Black with Chainmail highlights to give it a very dull appearance (and to disguise the fact it still looked a bit like Elven armour!). With a few dags painted in Bleached Bone, the model looked suitably Orcy!
