WHY COLLECT THIS ARMY?
Sometimes, it's fun just to collect the units that you like, and that's exactly what I've done with this force. I've packed in several of my favourite choices from the High Elf army list and background to make a force which is fun to use and pretty sharp on the battlefield, too. Because of the way that High Elf armies are often drawn from all around Ulthuan, there's no reason why you can't include a mixture of regiments as varied as you wish.
STRENGTHS
- This army can do a little of everything. It has some brutally efficient close-combat troops, along with a powerful Dragon Mage. The Shadow Warriors and Bolt Thrower can contribute in the Shooting Phase.
- The Dragon Mage. No other Warhammer army can field a Dragon in games smaller than 2,000 points, so the Dragon Mage is something really special. With a unit strength high enough to break flanks, the Dragon Mage is something that your opponents will have to concentrate on very hard (leaving the rest of your army unimpeded).
AREAS OF CAUTION
- Whenever you spread out your skills too wide, you risk losing focus. This army can compete in every phase but not as effectively as a dedicated shooting, close-combat, or magic force could. When choosing your force, bear in mind what you want it to do. As for this force, I simply wanted it to look awesome and include all my favourite units. If it loses, at least it looks good doing it!
TACTIC: GO GET 'EM
In my experience, this army works really well on the philosophy of "go out there and fight them." Assign each unit a specific function and then get cracking. Typically, I use the Repeater Bolt Thrower to take out heavy cavalry, the Shadow Warriors to kill off war machines, and the Dragon and Chariots to deal with troublesome regiments (Dragon hits the side or rear, while Chariots smash into the front – very effective).
