MODELLING AND PAINTING URUK-HAI SCOUTS

Page: 1|2|3|4|5|6

The plastic Uruk-hai Scouts are a wonderful addition for any player whose collection tends to lean towards the machinations of Sarauman. Lower-points-cost Uruk-hai that are equally handy with a bow AND crudely fashioned sword? Sure thing! Plus, with new plastic miniatures, a whole new realm of conversion possibilities opens wide. You can easily drop a few of these great new miniatures in as Uruk-hai Captains to vary your force's look. Below are just three such pulchritudinous plastic possibilities from veteran hobbyist Ty Finocchiaro to get your brain going.

URUK HAI CAPTAIN – SOOGLUK

I decided to start things off simple with an Uruk-hai Captain conversion. Grabbing the coolest model (in my opinion) off the Uruk-hai Scout sprue, I set to work. Going back into my collection, I gathered bits for an additional sword and shield. I cut a small notch into the unoccupied left hand so that the second sword fit snugly. A drop of glue, a moment of alignment, and I had a pretty nice dual-sword wielding maniac. To complete the model, I glued a shield in place upon the Uruk's back. I think I'll name him "Soogluk."

URUK HAI CAPTAIN – GORTAK

Moving along to my second Uruk-hai Captain, "Gortak," I simply couldn't resist the two sword vibe. I snagged another cool Uruk-hai Scout from the sprue and then gathered up another sword and a shield. I used the same techniques from Soogluk to add Gortak's second sword. Gortak appears to have lost his helmet at some point, and I decided to help him out with this problem. I took an extra Uruk-hai, clipped off his head, and then hollowed out the helmet. I affixed the newly fashioned helm to Gortak's hip with a drop of glue. Lastly, I wanted to make a skin-flask full of the invigorating draft Uruk-hai Scouts drink in order to keep running day and night. I made one with some Green Stuff and a tiny bit of plasticard tubing.

URUK HAI SCOUT BANNER

With Soogluk and Gortak out of the way, I could concentrate on converting a banner for my Uruk-hai Scouts. The problem was that I really didn't see these swift moving creatures carrying an actual banner, as it would only slow 'em down. So, I figured a loud horn or similar instrument would do the trick nicely and fit the whole Uruk-hai Scout theme. Boromir has a nice horn... so I borrowed it. I glued the horn into the left hand and then repositioned the left arm upwards. To finish the model, I rolled out a thin line of putty, attached it to the horn, and draped it over the arm as a shoulder strap.
