MODELLING AND PAINTING URUK-HAI SCOUTS

Page: 1|2|3|4|5|6

The plastic Uruk-hai Scouts are a wonderful addition for any player whose collection tends to lean towards the machinations of Saruman. Lower-points-cost Uruk-hai that are equally handy with a bow AND crudely fashioned sword? Sure thing! Plus, with new plastic miniatures, a whole new realm of conversion possibilities opens wide. You can easily drop a few of these great new miniatures in as Uruk-hai Captains to vary your force's look. Below are just three such pulchritudinous plastic possibilities from veteran hobbyist Dave Taylor to get your brain going.

URUK HAI CAPTAIN – VARNAK

My first Captain conversion, Varnak, was built from a Scout with sword. I replaced his small, puny sword with a much larger version carved (very carefully) from a piece of sprue. I figured the two-handed weapon might come in handy against powerful critters like Ents (yikes!) and the like.

I extended the handle with another piece of the pike left over from another conversion (plasticard tubing would also work). The beauty of making Uruk-hai weapons is that they aren't works of art, just utilitarian killing tools. It's amazing what you can create from leftovers!

URUK HAI CAPTAIN – UGRUK

The second Captain conversion, Ugruk, involved a straightforward head swap from an older plastic Uruk-hai Warrior. It only makes sense to have a properly helmeted Uruk-hai to lead the way. As Ugruk will be in charge of my bow-armed Scouts, I gave him a bow from another plastic Scout by cutting out the hand and replacing the bow's grip with a section of pike left over from my drummer conversion (shown below). With a drop of glue, I had the newly created bow in place.

URUK HAI SCOUT BANNER

Converting the Uruk Scout drummer (Uruk-hai Scouts wouldn't drag a banner around!) was quite simple. I used one of the Scout bodies with a sword and replaced the hands with those from an older plastic Uruk-hai pikeman trimmed at the appropriate points. Rather than constructing a drum, I figured the Uruks would use hollow things close at hand to make noise. I cut helmets from some spare plastic models I had (the Uruk pikeman, a Mordor Orc, and a Gondorian bowman) and hung them from the drummer's belt. Now he can keep a rhythm for the fighting Uruk-hai to follow.
