DURIN, KING OF KHAZAD-DÛM
Painted by Nathan Bishop
The Crown. For Durin's crown, I started off by painting the entire helm with Shining Gold. I then used a 1:1 mix of water to Flesh Wash over the Shining Gold. Once that dried, I painted the red parts of the crown with Mechrite Red, which I then washed with Magenta Ink. Next, I highlighted the gold area with a 1:1 mix of Shining Gold and Mithril Silver. Finally, I highlighted the red with Blood Red and then a second highlight of a 1:1 mix of Blazing Orange and Blood Red.
Durin's Skin. For Durin's face (and hands), I started with a basecoat of Tallarn Flesh Citadel Foundation Paint, which I then washed with Flesh Wash ink. Once that dried, I highlighted the face — first with Dwarf Flesh, and then with Elf Flesh.
Beard and Hair. I began Durin's beard and hair with a basecoat of Calthan Brown Citadel Foundation Paint. Then, I painted a 1:1 mix of water and Brown Ink over the hair. For the first highlight, I used Bestial Brown, and then I mixed up a 1:1 ratio of Bestial Brown and Bleached bone for the second highlight.
The Axe. I first painted the axe head with Boltgun Metal. Then, I gave it a wash of Black Ink that I had thinned down with a 1:1 ratio of water to ink. Next, I painted the wood part of the handle Scorched Brown and the handle grip with Mechrite Red Citadel Foundation Paint. I then drybrushed the axe head with Chainmail and painted the gold areas with Shining Gold. I washed the Shining Gold with Flesh Wash ink and the handle grip with Magenta Ink. Then, I highlighted the wood part of the handle with Dark Flesh and the axe head with Mithril Silver. I mixed up 1:1 Shining Gold to Mithril Silver to highlight the gold areas on the axe. Finally, I highlighted the handle grip, first with Blood Red, and then with an even mix of Blood Red and Blazing Orange.
The Gauntlets. I first painted the gauntlets with Shining Gold and then washed them with a 1:1 mix of water and Flesh Wash ink. Then, I highlighted the gauntlets with a 1:1 mix of Shining Gold and Mithril Silver. Next, I painted the undershirt with Codex Grey and then highlighted it with Fortress Grey.
The Cloak. To basecoat the cloak, I started with Adeptus Battlegrey Citadel Foundation Paint. I then used Codex Grey for the second highlight along the raised areas of the cloak. Then, I highlighted the edges of the cloak with Fortress Grey followed by a final highlight of a 1:1 mix of Fortress Grey and Skull White.
