Khazad-dûm
PAINTING DWARF WARRIORS

Khazad-dûm is the richest Dwarf Hold. This good fortune is reflected in their Mithril armour and well-crafted weapons. With their strong colour scheme, it's quite straightforward to paint a characterful Khazad-dûm army. Below, you will find a step-by-step guide for painting Dwarf Warriors from this legendary realm. Undercoat your Dwarf with Chaos Black, follow the instructions, take your time, and you'll have a model painted up in no time.

1

Start things off by painting all fleshy areas of the Dwarf (like the hands and face) with Dark Flesh. Next, paint the beard with a 1:1 mix of Codex Grey to Chaos Black. In the photos shown above, we painted the model's base at this stage, but it's really up to you when to paint it.

2

Continue to build up the skin with a coat of slightly watered-down Tanned Flesh. In fact, water down pretty much every coat of highlight colour. This water will help the paint flow better and the colour dry smoothly. Hit the beard once more with some streaks of pure Codex Grey. Begin painting the Dwarf's shirt and skirt with a basecoat of Catachan Green.

3

Finish the Dwarf Warrior's skin with a few well-placed strokes of Dwarf Flesh. On the beard, paint a few lines of Fortress Grey here and there. As you'll see, these lines break up the monotony of a single colour (Codex Grey) for a nice effect. Highlight the folds of the shirt and skirt with a 1:2 mix of Camo Green to Catachan Green.

4

Mix up a 2:1 ratio of Camo Green and Bleached Bone and finish the shirt and skirt with a few highlights of the colour. Carefully pick and choose where you want these lines to go. Moving on to the boots, mix up a 2:1 ratio of Codex Grey and Chaos Black. Paint a few lines of this mix onto the boots for a subtle black-leather highlight.

5

Time to start the metallics by painting the armour plates and helmet Shining Gold. Remember to either replace your water after using metallic paints or use a separate cup of water for metallics. This way, the metallic flakes won't mix with standard Citadel Colours and cause a sparkle effect on your model! Next, paint the leather and wood items on the model, like the belt, pouches, pants, and axe haft, with Scorched Brown.

6

Mix up a 1:1 ratio of water and Chestnut Ink and then carefully spread it across the gold armour areas. Do this carefully and purposefully so as not to get ink on other parts of the model! While this dries, highlight the wood and leather areas with some watered-down Dark Flesh.

7

Lightly go back over the gold areas you just washed with Chestnut Ink (once it's dry, of course!) with Shining Gold. Next, paint any metal components like axes, belt buckles, and helmets with a careful coat of Boltgun Metal.

8

To highlight the gold, mix up a 1:1 ratio of Shining Gold to Mithril Silver. Just paint the tips of these gold areas to achieve a simple highlight. Finally, highlight the very edges of any Boltgun Metal components with a bit of pure Mithril Silver.

1

Paint the shield in much the same way as the Dwarf Warrior itself. Start off with a basecoat of Catachan Green for the shield's face.

2

Next, paint the shield face with a 1:2 mix of Camo Green and Catachan Green.

3

Finish the shield face with a a few careful strokes of 2:1 Camo Green and Bleached Bone.

4

Moving on to the rim of the shield, apply a coat of Boltgun Metal.

5

Complete the shield rim by highlighting the edges of it with Mithril Silver. Attach the shield, and your Dwarf Warrior is ready to defend the keeps of the Misty Mountains from invaders!
