THE DWARVES

The Dwarves are the toughest and most-durable army in The Lord of The Rings SBG' there's simply no other force that offers such a high Defence value. Even the best Heroes from other armies are hard pressed to match a Dwarf Warrior's Defence value – Durin's folk are that good.

Add to that their excellent fighting skill at close range, and the Dwarves form a formidable army. Their only true weakness is that they are a slow army. Against Goblins, this limitation is rarely a problem, but it's certainly not an advantage.

When I've played my games with Dwarves, I find myself repeating three tactics more frequently than any others, which I call the "Wall", the "Rock," and the "Flying Axe." Each is a simple battlefield ploy that any Dwarf player can use.

THE WALL

This technique is a derivation of the traditional Shield Wall but made infinitely more effective because of the Defence of the Dwarves. Essentially, it allows you to cordon off an area of the gaming area and hold it at all costs. Dwarf warriors armed with shields are great at performing the Wall. Their Defence of 7 means that even Uruk-hai struggle to smash through this Dwarf line. Until recently, these Dwarves were the best defensive troops in the game; now, though, there is a new Dwarf on the block!

The Wall
Dwarf Warriors are excellent defensive troops. By anchoring your wall between two areas of difficult or impassable terrain, you can guard your flanks and make the formation even harder to defeat.

Vault Wardens specialize in fighting in the cramped and dingy conditions in the Mines of Moria. As the only Dwarves armed with spears, they can fight in a deeper formation than their kinsmen, and they present an awesome Defence of 9 to the front. There's nothing short of a Balrog that can get through their formation without a real effort. By placing a Dwarf with a banner behind them, the Vault Wardens can get rerolls to win the combats, too.

If you absolutely have to hold a position, the Vault Wardens are the best way to do it! There's a reason they are called "tunnel fighting teams" after all.

Shield Wall
Vault Wardens are the ultimate tunnel fighters.
Only a concerted effort by the best Evil Warriors will dislodge them.
