Remnants of The Ancients
RUINED LIZARDMEN PILLARS

In the jungles of Lustria, many strange ruins can be found. Here are a few simple steps you can follow in order to create a set of ancient ruins to battle over!

IngredientsShaped pillar

1

Cut out a rectangle of insulation foam that has equal length faces. This will be the main ruined pillar. Then cut out a cube of foam that has the same dimensions as the rectangle. Using a pen, mark off where you want to segment the pillar. The main idea is to make the segments as long as the pillar is wide, so you have square segments.

2

Using a hot wire foam cutter, dip into the areas you marked off and create a small trench all the way around the pillar. Repeat this with each square segment. Move slowly and carefully so as not to dig into the foam too deep. To finish off with the foam cutter, cut the hard edge that runs up and down the pillar.

3

The basic shape of your pillar is now complete. Now, it is time to add some details. Lizardmen ruins are generally lavished with iconographic symbols and markings. So, using a soldering iron, slowly draw some random shapes and icons into the foam. Check out the Lizardmen Army book for some great ideas. If you do not have a soldering iron, carefully use a sharp hobby knife to make your symbols. Place an icon in each face of the pillar.

4

Glue your pillar onto a base and texture the piece using sand. We chose to make it lean to one side slightly so it would appear sunken and decrepit. Glue a few pebbles down to break up the monotony. To add a weathered feel to the foam, use a can of primer to lightly dust the pillar. The primer will eat away at the foam a bit, making it coarse. Do not over spray the piece, as too much primer will completely eat the foam away!

5

Paint your pillar in any fashion you see fit. We started by drybrushing heavily Codex Grey, moving onto Fortress Grey, and finishing with Space Wolves Gray. Also a bit of Snot Green was lightly stippled or lightly drybrushed in select areas for a mossy feel.

6

As a bonus, aquarium plants were glued onto the base to enhance the jungle feel of the piece. Just find some suitable specimens, clip them up, and superglue them into place!
