LIZARDMEN TACTICS
BY MARK HAVENER
Mark Havener, a long-time Lizardmen player who wrote "Tactics Of The Old Ones" in the Lizardmen Army book, returns with even more tactics for your Lizardmen Army!
Mark: It was great fun writing the Tactics section of the Lizardmen army book. Unfortunately, for that book I was restricted to just a couple pages of notes, so could only touch on the bare essentials of using the army, and offer a couple suggestions on army designs. I had a lot more to say (those that know me well know that this is usually the case with me, no matter the topic!), but no room to say it. Fortunately the folks at Games Workshop thought I had another useful word or two to share, so they gave me a bit more room here. So let's get to it! (you'll have to imagine my hands rubbing together gleefully at this point, unfortunately...).
I'm going to expand a bit on the tactics of the Lizardmen here. I'll discuss the units and what I see as the strengths and weaknesses (yes they have them Anthony, now hush!) of each unit in turn, and then discuss army design a bit more, including building armies of different sizes (not all games require armies built to the latest tournament points value after all!), and then how I generally use my Lizardmen armies when I play using my scaled lovelies.
GET TO KNOW YOUR TROOPS
So you've bought the book and looked through the models, but how do
you know what to buy? A lot of it depends upon your playing style, but even
if you understand your personal style (and not everyone does), you can't build
an army to suit it without knowing how the troops behave, how they work individually,
and (most importantly) how they work with other types of troops. So let's look
at what we have here.
ARMY LISTS
Now we get to the army lists. What I'm going to do is give you an example
of army lists that I would put together for battles of 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000
points, and give you an idea of how I might use them. The army lists will necessarily
be general, as will the tactics discussed, so keep this in mind. While these
tips should hopefully prove useful for tournament play or club league nights
(where you don't normally know what type of army your opponent will be playing
until you get there), you might want to modify your strategy somewhat if you
know the type of army you'll be fighting.
