An army worthy of Mordor
MARK BEDFORD'S MORDOR ARMY

Since the release of the first Mordor Orcs in 2001 Mark Bedford has been keen on the idea of assembling an army of the venal and capricious creatures. Until the glut of metal and plastic models released for The Return of The King range he had consoled himself by collecting a force of Uruk-hai of the White Hand; but now that the forces of Mordor have been reinforced his army is complete and even includes a number of conversions and works in progress to make it even more unique.

Mark likes the forces of Mordor because of the large variety of troop types and characters available. A Mordor force could conceivably be made up of a huge swathe of poorly armed Orc Warriors led by their captains, or a more elite force of Uruk-hai and Trolls led by a Nazgûl or even Sauron himself!

The models below are the ones Mark has finished and regularly uses as his army of Mordor. He plays games of varying points using some or all of these models.

Click on the each of the images on this page for a larger view of the model:

NAZGÛL ON FELL BEAST

Mark's force is often led into battle by one of the Ringwraiths mounted on a Fell Beast. The Nazgûl is not only a competent fighter but has also a range of magical powers to utilise, including the chance to Transfix its opponents, rendering even the most powerful of enemy characters temporarily useless.

Gorbag, Grishnakh and Shagrat

NAMED ORC CHARACTERS

Named characters like Gorbag, Grishnákh and Shagrat bring a bit of variety to the force, as well as an extra point of Might over a normal captain of their race.

Captains and Banners

ORC CAPTAINS AND BANNERS

Not only are Orc Captains somewhat better in combat than their underlings but with their Might points they can be used either to kill large numbers of enemy troops or to initiate heroic moves and combats, allowing their troops to pick their fights and seize advantageous positions.

The banners give a re-roll to an Orc in a nearby combat once per turn, and are therefore very useful fo Orcs with their low Fight value.

Orc Warriors

ORCS WITH HAND WEAPONS AND SHIELDS

Although they are lightly armoured and somewhat cowardly in comparison to Human Warriors of Minas Tirith or the Elves of the Last Alliance, Mordor Orcs can usually count on the advantage of being able to take to the field of battle in larger numbers than their opponents.

Orc Warriors

ORCS WITH TWO HANDED WEAPONS

These Orcs with double-handed axes are less likely to strike a blow than their more lightly equipped fellows, but the blows that do land are even more devastating. As such they make good troops to have in support of other Orcs.

Orc ArchersOrc Spearmen

ORCS WITH BOWS AND SPEARS

Orc archers are not particularly accurate, and their bows lack the impressive range of those wielded by other races, but they can harry an enemy who is unwilling to get up close - such as other archers. Mark plans on expanding his unit of archers so that he can take even more of an advantage from the new Volley Fire rules.

Makr's force also contains a few Orcs armed with spears to lend assistance to assaults by other troops in close combat.

Uruk-hai

MORDOR URUK-HAI

Stronger and better in a fight than standard Orcs, the Uruk-hai make the perfect shock troops for an army of Mordor. Although they lack the different options available to the Uruk-hai of the White Hand this is no bad thing as you can concentrate on giving them the equipment most suited to what Uruk-hai do best - charging into combat with the enemy.

Mordor Trolls

MORDOR TROLLS

The Trolls of Mordor are even larger and more aggressive than their stunted cousins who inhabit the caves of Middle-earth. These monsters of the battlefield are one of the best weapons in the arsenal of Mordor, capable of crushing almost any individual they come up against with their 3 Strength 7 attacks.

Siege Bow

ENGINES OF WAR

In support of his infantry Mark has included a couple of war machines. He has modelled the siege bow to look as if it is firing flaming ammunition (watch out for rules for using different types of ammunition, including a rain of decapitated heads, in the Siege of Gondor supplement).

Catapult

FUTURE PROJECTS

The models shown above are all the ones that Mark has currently finished for use in his Mordor army, but he has other work in progress units that he will be including once they are finished, these include a contingent of Warg-riding Orcs and a second Nazgûl.

Next: Future Projects.
