INK WASHES

Ink washes add shadow and depth to your basecoat of Citadel Foundation Paint.
The next technique that is very useful when painting many miniatures at once is to use inks and washes. These methods add a bit of shadow and depth to a model that's been basecoated with Citadel Foundation Paints. Ink washes are really only useful when the basecoat is lighter than the ink wash itself. For the example above, we used a Magenta Ink, which is darker than the basecoat red. This ink goes really well with the Mechrite Red. Why not use Red Ink? Red Ink is a bit lighter than Magenta Ink, and the effect is not as pronounced on the darker Mechrite Red. For the chest eagles, we used Chestnut Ink, and we used Brown Ink on the belt pouches and Black Ink on all the metal bits and on the grenades. It's also a good idea to water down your inks just a little, as this will help it flow into the cracks and recesses where shadow should go, anyway.
