PAINTING VEHICLES WITH FOUNDATION PAINTS

BASECOATING VEHICLES: STAY IN THE LINES

STEP 1: LINE IN

For large surfaces like armour plates, it can make a lot of sense to paint the edges first and then fill them in with colour. This way, you can take your time and preserve the undercoat so you don't have to touch up those hard-to-reach recesses. Some hobbyists do this step first en masse on all their vehicles and then go back and fill in the lines for all of them – it depends on which approach you prefer. In this example, we used the new Citadel Foundation Paint Mechrite Red.

STEP 2: COLOURING TIME

Once you have the lines painted around all of the areas of undercoat you want to preserve, you can break out the Tank Brush and cover the bulk of the vehicle. By carefully lining in those areas in the first place, you make this step a breeze (you can even watch a movie while you paint at this stage). Just make sure you stay in the lines, and keep your paints thin enough so your brush strokes don't show after the paint dries. One-coat wonderland!

STEP 3: HIGHLIGHT

Before you contaminate your brush and water with metallic paints for the details like exhaust pipes and treads, take the time to highlight your armour plates. The Citadel Foundation Paints are ideal for this step, as their high level of pigment makes them really pop as a highlight with only one application. In this example, we mixed up a batch of 2:1 Mechrite Red to Iyanden Darksun for the edging.
