Blood on the Mark
CONVERTING RIDERS OF ROHAN

Fans of the Riders of Rohan now have a new boxed set full of their favourite models. With the release of the updated The Lord of The Rings Strategy Battle Game rulebook, we couldn't think of a better time to revisit the warriors of the Riddermark.

In addition, UK White Dwarf 313 has a scenario, "The Wrath of Isengard," that pits the contents of the Valiant Rohirrim against the Evil of Isengard in an awesome battle for the fate of a village of the Westfold.

We've covered how to paint your basic Rider of Rohan and mount in the past. Rather than cover that again, Bryan Barnes has converted a few models from the new boxed set and painted them up to show their versatility. You can see what he concocted, below.

Bryan Barnes: I wanted to try a few different conversions with my Riders — when I collect an entire Rohan army, I will carry these ideas across the entire group. As most fans will have noticed, when the Rohirrim charge in The Return of The King, you can see several throwing their spears, so I wanted to convert one actually throwing a spear and one carrying a spare. I made the hafts for both out of steel rod (should've used brass... steel is tough). I clipped one spear head off a model. I made the other by filing down a plasticard rod into a point, cutting out and bevelling a triangle of plasticard sheet, drilling a hole in the triangle, cutting out the back section of the triangle (by cutting two lines from the centre of the hole towards the back), and gluing both the triangle and filed rod together.

After that, I opted for a few simple conversions. In one, I glued a properly posed Mordor Orc to the base of a Rider to look like it had been run down in a charge. For the other, I added Green Stuff in various places on a Rider to look like Warg hides. That should intimidate those Isengard punks!

For painting, I went with a variety of different techniques and colours for the horses to experiment. I found that gradually layering colours works much better than drybrushing. For the Riders themselves, I basecoated their cloaks with Catachan Green and keep mixing in Snot Green for crease highlights. I painted the greaves, helms, gauntlets, and scabbards with Dark Flesh highlighted with Bestial Brown. For the gloves, sleeves, and trousers, I applied Scorched Brown and mixed in Bleached Bone for a highlight. For the metal areas I used a combination of Shining Gold and Boltgun Metal. I painted the faces (those that could be seen) with Tanned Flesh, then Dwarf Flesh, and a highlight of Elf Flesh. For the shields, I mixed Red Gore and Dark Flesh, while I hit the icons with Bleached Bone. For the hair, I basecoated with Bubonic Brown and kept mixing in Skull While for successive highlights.
