Building the Deeping Wall
MODELLING A HELM'S DEEP TERRAIN PIECE

In this article Jake Landis takes a look at building a terrain piece based around the Fortress of Helm's Deep boxed set.

Helms Deep

There have been many The Lord of The Rings terrain projects over the last few years to help spread the word about this great strategy battle game. As a part of the US Hobby Team, I was asked to make a The Lord of The Rings diorama for conventions across the United States. Being a huge fan of Tolkien's books, the amazing films, and the games themselves, I viewed this project as more fun than work!

I sat down and started thinking about what exactly to do. There were so many memorable scenes from Tolkien's tales that I could make into a Games Workshop diorama. I finally settled on using the Fortress of Helm's Deep boxed set to make an action-packed diorama. The resin fortress looked cool and would make for a great visual foundation for the diorama, especially when complemented by Citadel Miniatures from The Two Towers range.

Check out the images below to see how I went about modelling and painting the diorama. Also be sure to look for this piece at GW events – you may get a chance to see this project up close and personal. However, if you can't make it to one of the events, you can get a sense of the diorama by clicking on the images below to bring up an enlarged image.

Using an 18"x18" piece of plywood for a base, I glued down foam 'rocks,' natural rocks, and some wood chips to form the cliff face. I then added the Fortress at Helm's Deep resin walls.

I primed the entire piece with Chaos Black (making sure to seal the foam parts by hand before spraying). Then, I dusted the diorama with Shadow Grey and Blood Red to give it a weathered basecoat.

I drybrushed the stones with Fortress Grey and gave the sand a Scorched Brown basecoat.

I drybrushed the stones again with a very light coat of Skull White. Then, I drybrushed the sand with Bubonic Brown.

I used green washes where the rocks would be weathered and on the riverbed to create a mossy look. To finish painting, I lightly drybrushed the sand with Bleached Bone.

I poured the resin "water" and glued static grass in place. Finally, I added some painted Citadel Miniatures to show the battle of Helm's Deep in full swing.
