GETTING STARTED WITH BLACK TEMPLARS
Page: 1|2|3|4|5|6|7|8
There are certainly a few different ways a person could go about painting
a Black Templars Space Marine (which the Templars call an "Initiate").
Here, however, we'll focus on how to paint an Initiate using the most common
method. Once your model has a solid Chaos Black undercoat, you can start
painting. Follow the detailed instructions below and check out the stage-by-stage
images for reference as you paint your model. Don't fret if the model doesn't
come out picture-perfect in the end — painting takes time and practice
to master. Just do the best you can each time and be open to learning new
techniques from others. Before you know it, you'll be quite an accomplished
painter with models you'll be proud to deploy in the 41st millennium.

Cover
every surface of the model with a smooth coat of Chaos Black. Spray primer
works best, but make sure you get all the nooks and crannies. Start by
basecoating any scrolls and skulls with Scorched Brown. Once dry, carefully
paint Boltgun Metal on the arm and leg joints, along with the boltgun,
any tubing, and the backpack. If you make any mistakes, don't worry too
much — just erase the error with some Chaos Black. Be sure to change
your brush-cleaning water after using any metallic colours, as they leave
metal flecks that will ruin other colours. |

With
Scab Red, very carefully paint the eyes. Continue using Scab Red to basecoat
any shoulder insignia, Crusader Seals, or Black Templar crosses. Start
building up the colour on the scrolls and skulls with watered-down Graveyard
Earth. Using a Fine Detail Brush, very patiently fill in the shoulder
pads with watered-down Fortress Grey. This process will take several
careful coats, so be patient and take your time! Finally, paint any chains
and a few pieces of the boltgun with Mithril Silver. Once again, change
your water before continuing. |

Highlight
the eyes with a bit of watered-down Blood Red mixed with Scab Red. Use
this highlighting combination for anything you painted Scab Red in the
previous step. Continue to build up any scrolls or skulls with Kommando
Khaki. Go over the Fortress Grey areas with a coat of watered-down Skull
White. Again, this will take a few coats, so be very careful and patient.
Your Marine is certainly good enough for gaming at this point! |

Add
final highlights to the skulls and scrolls with Bleached Bone. Now, we'll
tackle the power-armour highlights. Using a Fine Detail Brush, carefully
edge areas of the armour with very thin lines of Codex Grey. This technique
is hard to put into words, so be sure to check out the pictures to get
an idea of what you should be doing. Once you finish edging the armour,
go back and fix any mistakes with Chaos Black. Next, heavily water down
some Brown Ink and carefully paint this onto any metallic areas. |

Nearly
there! Using the same edging technique, apply a few lines of Fortress
Grey onto the model's power armour. Lightly go back drybrush any metallic
areas with Boltgun Metal or Mithril Silver. Clean out your water and
then feel free to add cool details like tiny script onto the power armour.
Get a good point on your brush, dip it in some Skull White, and add a
tiny drop of it to the outer corner of each eye. This will produce a
reflective glass effect. Once you're all done, paint the model's base.
Don't worry too much if you get some brown onto the model's armour -
after all, items painted black are really hard to keep clean in real
life,
so it makes sense that the Initiate might have picked up some dust during
battle. |
