BUILDING AN ABANDONED BLACK TEMPLARS KEEP

The Black Templars have built hundreds of Chapter keeps as they have carried out their Crusades over the millennia. This guide shows you how to make your own keep table.

TOOLS

  • Long-bladed retractable craft knife
  • Hobby knife
  • Felt-tipped pens
  • Metal ruler
  • Paintbrushes & paints

MATERIALS

  • 25-mm (1") polystyrene foam
  • 5-mm (1/4") polystyrene foam
  • Textured wallpaper
  • Mix of coarse and fine sand
  • White (PVA) glue

Over their 10,000 years of crusading, the Black Templars have conquered hundreds of worlds. On each of these worlds, it is their tradition to establish a Chapter keep to remind the populace that the Emperor is ever-watchful. These grim fortresses also serve as places to recruit new Space Marines and act as staging posts for mustering the Crusades together. There have been hundreds of Chapter keeps established over the millennia, some of which are still standing, while others have been abandoned as the Crusades press on with their vital missions. However, such lonely ruins are never forgotten.

The imaginations of Rick Smith and Ty Finocchiaro were seized by the keep concept. Rick set about building the interior of one chamber of these mammoth structures, while Ty painted it to match the look of the Templar colour schemes.
