SQUAD SELECTION AND TACTICA

Dave Taylor: This Crimson Fist Command squad is designed to add a new look to my existing Crimson Fists army. The army is based around a core of Tactical and Scout squads and supported by Bikes and Land Speeders. I needed to add a counter-attack unit to the army when facing the hated Orks (Crimson Fists have the Suffer Not the Alien to Live trait advantage). Brother Librarian Ramiro and his super-tooled Command squad make just the force to do the job!

I've never used a Librarian before, so I thought I'd finally give it a try with the new Codex: Space Marines. There was no reason not to make him an Epistolary. I replaced the Storm of Wrath psychic power with Fear of the Darkness, a power I hope will be useful for chasing off some of those weak-willed Ork mobz from my bolter line. To help Ramiro's unit dispatch stubborn Greenskins, an extra +D3 Attacks from the Might of Heroes power was the obvious choice. I gave Ramiro a plasma pistol for an extra punch against light Ork vehicles and mega-armoured opponents.

Squad Ramiro is tooled up to support the Brother Librarian in close-range firefights (two plasma guns, an additional plasma pistol, and the heavy bolters from the Razorback) and in close combat (two power weapons and a power fist). Extra touches, like the Company Standard and combat shields, give this squad a good chance of surviving.

This Command squad's battlefield role is fairly simple. The squad hangs back, provides some additional medium-range fire (heavy bolters and plasma guns firing from vehicle fire points), locates the point in the enemy line that might waiver, and leaps into action to cut down the xenos scum. On the turn it disembarks from its Razorback (assuming it has moved less than 6"), Squad Ramiro can deliver six S7 shots from plasma weapons, three twin-linked S5 shots from the heavy bolters, and two S4 shots from bolt pistols. That's a lot of firepower that will put a real dent in any Nobz mob (or Terminator Squad for that matter)! All that before this Command squad even brings its power weapons to bear.

THE CONVERTED COMMAND SQUAD

Brother Librarian Ramiro of the Crimson Fists Chapter often leads expeditionary forces that track down and eradicate relatively small pockets of Orks. These expeditions are geared towards scouting for Orks and wiping them out with destructive firepower — a method that developed based on lessons learned during the cataclysmic Rynn's World incident.

BROTHER-LIBRARIAN RAMIRO

A dive into my bitz box also yielded classic Warhammer Chaos Warrior fists for Ramiro's backpack, guitar string for his force staff, a spare shoulder pad for his psychic hood (remember, carve with care!), and a Space Marine missile launcher left hand to direct his psychic powers (thanks to Mark Renye for that cool idea).

The bulk of the pieces used in my Command squad is straight from the box. However, since Brother-Librarian Ramiro and his team are Ork hunters, I wanted to add a few "trophies" and a stronger assault feel.

Enter the Ork Boyz sprue and the Space Marine Assault Squad sprue. A friend of mine had a few pieces left over from the construction of his enormous Ork horde. I borrowed some unused weapons and shoulder pads, even a top knot, to strengthen the Ork hunter motif.

VETERAN SERGEANT

I cut the additional combat shields for the Veteran Sergeant and Standard Bearer from plasticard and detailed them with rivets, icons, and purity seals.

I purchased the Space Marine Assault Squad sprue from GW Direct Sales, and those running legs were just clamouring to join the squad. The legs' posing really added to the dynamic feel of the models.

SPACE MARINE

These warriors are not afraid to use the weapons and armour of their bitter enemies, the Orks. Of course, liberal use of plasma fire can be used to settle the real differences between these two armies.

I used a Crimson Fists shoulder pad on one side and an Ork shoulder pad on the other to depict the Chapter Trait Suffer Not the Alien to Live (Orks) that gives the Crimson Fists the Preferred Enemy ability against Orks.
