GETTING STARTED WITH SPACE MARINES - PAINTING ULTRAMARINES

Page: 1|2|3|4|5|6|7

Once your models have been primed with Chaos Black spray paint, painting can begin. Below you will find a simple-but-effective colour scheme using 10 colours. Follow the detailed instructions and check out the stage-by-stage images as you paint your model for reference. Don't fret if the model doesn't come out picture perfect in the end. Painting takes time and practice to master. Just do the best you can each time and be open to learning new techniques from others. Before you know it, you'll be quite an accomplished painter with models you'll be proud to game with!

The Ultramarines are the most devout adherents of the Codex Astartes, the doctrine established for all Space Marines. For 10,000 years, the sons of Guilliman have been the shining examples of Space Marine valour and precision. So, we can assume that the new Ultramarines paint scheme presented in Codex: Space Marines has always been the actual one - these guys never change. The step-by-step guide below shows you how to duplicate this new scheme.

1

Prime the Space Marine with Chaos Black Spray Primer. For the basecoat, lightly drybrush Ultramarines Blue over the black (it may take three to seven passes to get the right colour). Each pass should leave a light dusting only, or you will get streaks. Leave the black in the cracks and other recesses - go back and clean up these areas with Chaos Black if you slopped a bit. If you are not confident in your drybrushing, you can simply paint on Regal Blue rather than drybrushing with Ultramarines Blue.

2

Basecoat the gold metallic areas with Shining Gold. Be careful on this and following steps as it is very difficult to clean up mistakes made on a drybrushed surface. Basecoat the eye lenses with Scab Red - make sure to leave black showing around the perimeter of the lens to convey depth.

3

Highlight the chest eagle with Mithril Silver. You are aiming for the top of the wings, skull, and the edges of each feather. Highlight the bottom edge of the eyes with Blood Red (again, avoid the black).

4

Apply a watered-down wash of Chestnut Ink over the chest eagle. Make sure it covers any Mithril Silver highlights so they blend with the gold. Add in a drop of Gloss Varnish if you find the ink pooling on you. Paint the gunmetal areas with Boltgun Metal - drybrush the bolter magazine, the helmet grill, and the backpack vents to leave some of the black showing.

5

Highlight the edges of the armor with a 4:1 mix of Ultramarines Blue to Skull White. For the black sections on the bolter and at the armour joints, highlight the edges with Codex Grey. With a 3:1 mix of Blood Red to Bad Moon Yellow, highlight one corner on each eye (inside corner on one, outside corner on the other). Place a small dot of Skull White on each lens for the reflection. Finish the details (eg, purity seal, base), and you're done.
