Iron Hands Conversions
JASON LOCKWOOD'S IRON HANDS ARMY

Jason Lockwood is an accomplished hobbyist who won a Silver Golden Demon trophy at the 2002 Chicago competition for the Dreadnought seen below, and he has completed a massive number of conversions to build his Iron Hands army.

Somewhat untraditionally, Jason decided to paint his Iron Hands in a deep red colour scheme rather than the conventional black. When asked why, Jason explains that painting his Iron Hands black would have made it difficult to show off all the layers of custom-built armour plates. He often claims that his red Iron Hands are a successor Chapter, and in fact, the two offshoot Chapters described in Index Astartes III, the Red Talons and the Brazen Claw, make this claim a convincing one.

SergeantAbove, you can see several different shots of Jason's award-winning Venerable Dreadnought Isentrager. The Dreadnought has an articulated left leg and a fully detailed foot. The operator compartment opens to reveal the Space Marine entombed inside surrounded by controls and life-support mechanisms. The legs, torso, and arms are held together with magnets so that the model can be disassembled after play.

The Dreadnought also has a custom plasma cannon and hand-sculpted icons and purity seals.

The banner depicts the silver wyrm and the planet Medusa from the founding legends of the Iron Hands. The back edges of the banner show pseudo-Necron iconography as a nod to the rumours connecting the Iron Hands to the Necrons.

TrooperJason converted every single model in his army. Some of his conversions emphasise the cybernetic nature of the warriors of the Iron Hands. Other conversions result in more dynamic poses for his models. Below, Jason points out a few of his conversions.

Jason: I modelled each Space Marine's left hand and forearm to show the mechanical replacement that every Iron Hand recruit undergoes.

I modified and posed some of the Space Marines in a kneeling position. I also custom made both shoulder pads on all the Space Marines.

For the Razorback squads, I added an extended armour carapace that hangs down the back of the Tactical armour as well as custom insignia on the sides and back ramp of the Razorbacks.

SergeantI added additional armour layers, extra fittings, hoses, and rivets to each suit of armour. For each Space Marine with an exposed head, I added interface wires that run down into the armour. Hollowed out helmets also hang from the belts of each of these models (check out the Iron Hand at the far right of the image).

I removed the side intakes from all of the backpacks and remounted them on the rear of the packs. I also refitted the bolters to have side-fed magazines and extended barrels.

I then added raised armour collars and additional cod-plates to my Devastators, and also extended the barrels on the rocket launchers placing a "firing screen" on the ready-to-fire launchers. I also added scratch-built binoculars to the Devastator spotter.
