PAINTING BLOOD RAVENS
SPACE MARINES
In this step-by-step guide, we explain how to paint your Blood Ravens
Space Marines and get them ready for the tabletop field of battle.

There are many ways to paint a Space Marine. You can paint them according to
a specific Chapter or make up a colour scheme of your own! Like so many others
enthralled by the Dawn of War computer game for the PC, Rik Turner of the UK
Web Team has set about creating an army of these formidable Blood Ravens
Space Marines. Here he explaines how he painted these superhuman warriors of
a long-forgotten Chapter.
Once your model has an undercoat, painting can begin. Follow the detailed instructions
and check out the stage-by-stage images as you paint your model. Don't fret
if the model doesn't come out picture perfect in the end, painting takes time
and practice. Just do the best you can each time and be open to learning new
techniques from others. Before you know it, you'll be quite an accomplished
painter with models you'll be proud to game with!

Not
wanting these Space Marines to appear as bright and resplendent as Blood
Angels, I decided to undercoat the miniatures with Chaos Black spray.
I then picked out each of the armoured plates of the power armour with
Scab Red, being careful to leave a thin line of black in the joins. The
shoulder pads, chest eagle and any purity seals were given a coat of Snakebite
Leather. The utility pouches on the belt were painted Scorched Brown. |

The
next stage was to highlight the armour and bring it up to a stronger red.
I went over the areas that I had painted Scab Red with Red Gore, once
again taking care to leave a thin line of the previous colour visible,
thereby building up the areas of shading around the joints in the armour
plates. The shoulder pads, chest eagle and purity seals were likewise
painted using Bubonic Brown, leaving some of the Snakebite Leather visible
in the recesses. The utility pouches were highlighted along the edges
with a 50:50 mix of Scorched Brown and Graveyard Earth. |

For
the final stage of painting the power armour, the very edges of the armour
plates were highlighted with Blood Red, which was carefully watered down
and thinned, blending into the Red Gore to create a more subtle shading
effect. Hard red lines were picked out on the absolute edges of the armour.
The shoulder pads, chest eagle and purity seals were both highlighted
with Bleached Bone, again leaving the Bubonic Brown showing. The utility
pouches were given a final highlight of Graveyard Earth. |

To
finish the miniature, the eyes and wax seals of the purity seals were
first painted Dark Angels Green, then highlighted with Goblin Green and
finally Scorpion Green. In each of the eyes, two small dots of Skull White
were painted to create reflection. The army badge, squad markings and
litanies that cover the shoulder pads and purity seals were all painted
on using thinned down Chaos Black and a very fine brush. Any metallic
areas on the model, such as the boltgun, and on the helmet and backpack,
were given a coat of Boltgun Metal, followed by a thinned down wash of
Black Ink. They were then highlighted with trace amounts of Mithril Silver.
To complete the model, the base was first painted Scorched Brown, then
drybrushed with Bestial Brown, Snakebite Leather, Bubonic Brown and, finally,
Bleached Bone to create a gradual shift in colour. |
