PAINTING SPACE MARINE CHAPLAINS

BLACK TEMPLARS TERMINATOR CHAPLAIN

Painted by Rich Curren

I have always felt a kinship with the Black Templars, as I like to think I share their zealous tendencies and grim determination. When I saw the new Terminator Chaplain, I had to add him to my Black Templars army and was eager to get started painting this mighty Space Marine hero.

HOW'D HE DO THAT?

To make my life easier, I painted the model in three parts: the main body, the storm bolter arm, and the crozius arcanum arm. Separating them made it much easier to get all the details while avoiding a stray brushstroke from marring a finished area. After cleaning the model of mould lines and flash, I glued it to a 40-mm round base with sand and small rocks made of chopped-up sprue plastic (see, there is a use for those frames). I also hollowed out a Space Marine helmet and added that to the base to suggest that the Chaplain was seeking revenge for a fallen brother.

After the glue dried, I primed all the components with Chaos Black Spray undercoat and basecoated with a hand-painted layer of thinned Chaos Black. Since I like to paint my bases first, I basecoated it with Bestial Brown. Next, I drybrushed with Bubonic Brown and then Bleached Bone. I finished the base with a Graveyard Earth coat around the rim.

Skull Helmet, Chest Eagle, and Other Bone Areas. I basecoated these with an even mix of Kommando Khaki and Codex Grey. Next, I applied straight Kommando Khaki, then an even mix of Kommando Khaki and Skull White, and finally a 1:2:1 mix of Kommando Khaki, Skull White, and water.

Gold Crozius Head and Armour Bolts. These were basecoated with a 1:2 mix of Dwarf Bronze to water. Long experience tells me that the gold and bronze Citadel Colours are very thick, so I added a bit of extra water and did a lot of mixing on the palette to make sure they flowed smoothly from the brush. After I finished basecoating with these colours, I gave them a wash of very thin Scorched Brown (1:4 with water). For highlights, I used a 1:1:2 mix of Dwarf Bronze to Shining Gold to water, followed by 1:2 Shining Gold to water, and finally 1:1:2 Shining Gold to Mithril Silver to water.

Crozius Arcanum Handle, Gem, and Purity Seal Wax. I basecoated these areas with an even mix of Scab Red, Chaos Black, and water. Then, I hit them with an even mix of Scab Red and water; followed by another even mix of Scab Red, Blazing Orange, and water; and finished with an even mix of Blazing Orange and water. I glazed these highlights with very thinned-down Red Ink. To finish, I added a small dot of Skull White on the gem to suggest reflection.

Scrolls and Parchment. I probably spent more time on these areas than any other part of the model. First, I basecoated them with Bestial Brown, followed by a 1:1 mix of Bestial Brown and Snakebite Leather, then straight Snakebite Leather. I continued this with an even mix of Snakebite Leather and Bronzed Flesh, followed by straight Bronzed Flesh. Next, I applied an even mix of Bronzed Flesh and Bleached Bone and hit the prominent areas with straight Bleached Bone. I continued the highlight with an even mix of Bleached Bone and Skull White, and finished with straight Skull White. I used Scab Red for the text with a Fine Detail Brush.

Helmet Eyes, Gems, and Purity Seal Wax.

Chains, Halo, and Metal Items. I basecoated these with watered-down Boltgun Metal and followed with a 1:1:3 wash of Chaos Black to Codex Grey to water. I added final highlights with thinned Chainmail.

Skull Helmet, Chest Eagle, and Other Bone Areas. These, I basecoated with an even mix of Kommando Khaki and Codex Grey. Next, I applied straight Kommando Khaki, then an even mix of Kommando Khaki and Skull White, and finally a 1:2:1 mix of Kommando Khaki, Skull White, and water.

Storm Bolter Housing. I basecoated this with an even mix of Scab Red, Chaos Red, and water. Next, I applied Scab Red followed by an even mix of Scab Red, Blazing Orange, and water for a highlight. I finished the highlight with straight Blazing Orange followed by a thin glaze of Red Ink. On one side of the weapon (not shown above), I added text with very fine lines of Skull White.

Shoulder Armour, Storm Bolter Ammo Belt, and Armour Studs. For these areas, I used a basecoat of heavily watered-down Dwarf Bronze. Then, I gave them a wash of thinned Scorched Brown (1:4 with water). I added highlights with a 1:1:2 mix of Dwarf Bronze to Shining Gold to water; followed by a 1:2 mix of Shining Gold and water, and finished with a 1:1:2 mix of Shining Gold to Mithril Silver to water.

Storm Bolter Metal, Flexible Armour Joints, and Shells. I basecoated these with watered-down Boltgun Metal and followed with a 1:1:3 wash of Chaos Black to Codex Grey to water. I added final highlights with thinned Chainmail.

Black Armour. Since I have a Black Templars army, I have a pot mixed up just for highlighting black armour. It is a 2:2:1 mixture of Chaos Black, Codex Grey, and water. I used this mix for the highlights on the Chaplain's armour. I edged over this with watered-down Codex Grey followed by even thinner lines of Fortress Grey. I used a Detail Brush and Fine Detail Brush to do these highlights.

Gold Trim. I basecoated the braziers, bolts, and armour trim with watered-down Dwarf Bronze. Then, I washed them with thinned Scorched Brown (1:4 with water). To finish, I highlighted with a 1:1:2 mix of Dwarf Bronze, Shining Gold, and water; followed by watered-down Shining Gold; and finally an a 1:1:2 mix of Shining Gold, Mithril Silver, and water.

Shoulder Icon. I basecoated the icon with an even mix of Kommando Khaki and Codex Grey. Next, I applied straight Kommando Khaki, then an even mix of Kommando Khaki and Skull White, and finally a 1:2:1 mix of Kommando Khaki, Skull White, and water.
