HOW'D HE DO THAT?

Shoulder Pads. My Red Scorpions Chapter has dark yellow shoulder pad rims as part of their colour scheme. This Chaplain had to carry that theme, too, so I painted the rims with Bubonic Brown. Then, I mixed in Golden Yellow followed by Skull White to add successive highlights.

For the crux terminatus and other icons, I basecoated them with Codex Grey and highlighted with thinned Fortress Grey followed by Skull White.

Eyes. For the eye lenses, I basecoated them with Red Gore and carefully highlighted them with a mix of Red Gore and Blood Red. Next, I highlighted them with Blood Red and then a mix of Blood Red and Dwarf Flesh.

Black Armour. First, I highlighted the armour and backpack with very thin lines of a mix of Chaos Black and Shadow Grey. For the final highlight, I added more Shadow Grey into the mix. I use these colour combinations so often for highlighting black armour that I have two pots mixed up, one for each highlight mixture. By using Shadow Grey instead of Codex Grey, I've found that I get a darker, more subtle highlight. For the ribbed joints between the armour, I hit them with a thin line of Shadow Grey using a Fine Detail Brush.

Crozius. For the top of the crozius and the crux and aquila pendants, I painted them with two layers of Shining Gold. Next, I applied a thinned dose of Flesh Wash. Once dry, I highlighted with Shining Gold, followed by Burnished Gold, and finished with a 3:1 mix of Burnished Gold and Mithril Silver.

For the handle of the crozius and the holster, I basecoated them with Dark Flesh. Next, I highlighted them with an even mix of Dark Flesh and Blood Red and then finished with straight Blood Red.

Bone and Parchment. I basecoated all the bone and parchment areas with Bestial Brown, and then I highlighted them with thinned-down Bleached Bone. Next, I built up the brightness of these areas with a few layers of thinned Skull White.
