FORCES OF GOOD POST-GAME CONCLUSIONS

Bryan Barnes
Bryan Barnes
Bryan: Well, my strategy worked.... sorta. I won, but only by the skin of my teeth. I was able to shut down Ty for quite a few turns, and I even managed to slay the Cave Troll in one fell swoop. Thanks, Boromir! Also, despite my worries beforehand, Gandalf resisted The Ring at every turn. He's a steadfast old Wizard.

However, I'm still having trouble remembering to use heroic moves and combats. I could have plugged that gap that Boromir left when he was pushed back late in the game. That might have saved me from any Fellowship deaths. However, the main problem with those actions in a scenario like this one is that it can leave you way out of position for the next wave. So, learn from my forgetfulness, but remember to use heroics with caution.

Another thing I should have done was move Legolas way in the back corner of the tomb. That way, he could sit back and shoot. Obviously, not into combat, but he could have given those Goblin archers a lot to worry about. Though I had planned to use him to plug gaps in the line, putting him up-close like that was a dumb move in hindsight.

Lastly, I've learned now that you can't rely on Gandalf's magic for anything beyond an Immobilize here or there. He keeps biffing every Sorcerous Blast he tries, so I think I'm going to give up on casting that spell unless the set-up is just too juicy (like 20 Goblins lined up single-file).

I should point out that the Evil side has a subtle advantage in the Moria stage of the campaign. Since their characters and troops don't carry over from scenario to scenario like the Ringwraiths did, the Evil player doesn't have to conserve anything. It really changes the game dynamic and counterbalances the added combat prowess of Gimli, Boromir, and Legolas. In short, Good players — don't get too confident when you gain these three Fellowship members, because you pay for 'em as you go.

Lucky for me, I was able to roll well in the Recovery phase, and Ty couldn't interfere this time around. However, the Fellowship is pretty beat-up at this stage, and I'm not sure how they're going to fare in the rest of Moria and beyond. Gandalf will leave them soon, so someone else will have to take The Ring and resist its influence. It'll be a miracle if they make it to Amon Hen.
