THE MINES OF MORIA

The Mines of Moria supplementAround the same time, we are releasing the Mines of Moria – a new introductory boxed game, similar to the Warhammer 40,000: Battle for Macragge boxed game. This set is a fantastic starting point for newcomers to the game and is sure to tempt veterans too with the great wealth of new models, including an all-new Fellowship, a new Cave Troll, a load of Moria Goblins, and scenery that re-creates Balin's Tomb – all in plastic!

Along with the models, the Mines of Moria includes a 32-page booklet that introduces the rules through a series of simple scenarios, and the set also contains a very useful cut-down version of the full rulebook (it only lacks the hobby section). The mini-rules manual includes exactly the same rules section as the full rules manual as well as profiles for the most popular models in the range (pretty much those that appear in the films). The mini-rules manual is important, as it means beginners can use all other The Lord of The Rings supplements, White Dwarf articles, web material, and the like, without needing to refer to the main rules manual. The mini rules manual is also easy to transport for those hobbyists who travel to club meetings, tournaments, and other gaming events.

SO, WHAT'S CHANGED?

First of all, let me reassure you. This new edition of the The Lord of The Rings Strategy Battle Game contains no major changes. You don't need to learn a new game from scratch. In fact, some of the changes are so subtle that they risk going undetected. I'd like to take this opportunity to go through the new rules manual, point out some of these minute changes, and explain the reasoning behind the more important ones.

THE MOVE PHASE

I simplified and shortened the Move Phase section of the book by removing the rules for defending barriers. Each successive iteration of these rules had grown in size (mostly because the sieges of Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith played such a huge part in the last two movies). I decided to dedicate a separate section to this complex matter and move it, together with the bit about defending elevated positions, to the Advanced Rules section of the rulebook. You don't really need to know these rather complicated rules from the start.

THE SHOOT PHASE

This section has not been altered substantively. Note, however, the change in the Wound Chart (Strength 3 wounds Defense 10 on the roll of a 6/6 instead of 6/5 as it used to – good news for Sauron!).

THE FIGHT PHASE

By removing the part about Defending Barriers, this section of the core rules is now slimmer. Apart from that, there are no changes to highlight.
