SULADÂN PAINTING MASTERCLASS
Suladân was already a renowned chieftain in the armies of Harad when he ventured into ruined Kârna and found the sword of Mardat. Since then, the name of the Serpent Lord has once more become a famous one throughout Harad and grows further still with each victory. Curiously, the legend of Mardat tells how the original Serpent Lord was slain by a rival in single combat — Suladân may yet share the same fate.
Below, you will find a gallery of the Mounted Suladân miniature as painted by Keith Robertson of the 'Eavy Metal Team. Click any of the pictures below for a larger view.
Sword: I basecoated these areas with Boltgun Metal. Then, I highlighted them with Chainmail. For the wash, I used watered-down Chaos Black. Finally, I did a light highlight with Mithril Silver.
Flesh: For Suladân's skin, I basecoated with Calthan Brown. Then, I applied successive highlights by adding in Dwarf Flesh to the original colour. I finished with a final highlight of Elf Flesh.
Gold: I basecoated the Gold areas with a mix of Shining Gold and Scorched Brown. Then, I painted on a straight Shining Gold layer. I highlighted first with Burnished Gold, and then with a mix of Burnished Gold and Mithril Silver. Finally, for the wash, I used watered-down Scorched Brown.
Gems: I basecoated the gems with a mix of Hawk Turquoise and Scaly Green. Then, I layered these areas up with straight Hawk Turquoise. Finally, I highlighted the gems in layers by adding more and more Skull White to the mix.
Horse Armour: I basecoated the Gold areas with a mix of Shining Gold and Scorched Brown. Then, I painted on a straight Shining Gold layer. I highlighted first with Burnished Gold and then with a mix of Burnished Gold and Mithril Silver. Finally, for the wash, I used watered-down Scorched Brown.
Horns: I started the horns with equal parts Chaos Black and Graveyard Earth. After this, it was straight to Graveyard Earth. To continue highlighting this area, I added Bleached Bone to the mix and then worked my way to using this paint exclusively. For the final highlights, I applied a mix of equal parts Bleached Bone and Skull White.
Legs: I basecoated the legs with a mix of equal parts Chaos Black and Liche Purple. To highlight, I added a little Bleached Bone to this mix.
Leather: I basecoated the leather areas with Dark Flesh. Then, I highlighted by adding increasing amounts of Kommando Khaki to Dark Flesh. To finish, I glazed these areas with watered-down Brown Ink.
Banner: I basecoated the red areas with Scab
Red, then followed this with a wash of watered-down Brown Ink. After this dried,
I painted on an equal mix of Scab Red and Bronzed Flesh. To highlight these
areas, I continued to add more Bronzed Flesh to the mix.
Horse Body: I basecoated this sizable area
with Codex Grey. Over the majority of the surface, I applied a coat of Fortress
Grey. Finally, I used Skull White on the raised areas.
Horse Tail: I basecoated the tail with straight Graveyard Earth. To highlight this area, I added Bleached Bone to the mix and then worked my way to using Bleached Bone exclusively. For the final highlights, I applied a mix of equal parts Bleached Bone and Skull White.
