IDEAS FOR BASING YOUR ARNOR MODELS

Arnor presents the modeller with a wide array of choices when it comes to thematic basing. Arnor contains many varied terrain elements for you to use as inspiration. Ruined cities, foothills of mountains, dark forests, and rocky hills can all be found in Arnor. Here, Ty Finocchiaro showcases several of the methods he used, together with helpful information on how model and paint your Arnor bases. Unless noted otherwise, all the bases shown were undercoated with Chaos Black Spray Paint before painting.

MONSTROUS BASES

Monstrous bases open up a whole realm of possibilities for the modeller. You can create small scenes using additional models, strew casualties amongst the base materials, and you can even incorporate terrain elements. For the truly mad, monstrous bases can take almost as long to build and paint as the model itself! Below you'll find an example of terrain that you might find in this shattered realm.

Modelling: For this monstrous scenic base, I built up an armature of Green Stuff and rock around the point where Gûlavhar meets the base. I added this material so as to lessen the abrupt way the rock Gûlavhar is attached to thrusts up out of the ground. Surrounding the model with heaps of rocks makes it appear more natural. Once this was all set, I selected a few branches and glued them amongst the rocks to represent some lone, dead tree husks. I glued a sprinkling of gritty gravel about the base, especially at the foot of any rock pilings. Finally, I covered everything with modelling sand. Once everything was painted, I glued clumps of coarse turf and static grass into cracks and crevices amongst the rocks.

Painting: I painted the sand using the following drybrush progression: Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, Vermin Brown, Desert Yellow, Kommando Khaki, and then Bleached Bone. For the rocks, I used three different colouring methods, one after the other. I applied each of the methods to various parts of the rocks, so it ended up being one big mish-mash of colour. In all cases, I often heavily watered down the colours for smooth, natural blends. I painted all the rocks using the following progression: Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, Terracotta, Terracotta + Fiery Orange, and then Fiery Orange. Next, I painted beige areas of rocks with the following progression: Scorched Brown, Scorched Brown + Vomit Brown, Vomit Brown, and then Desert Yellow. The third colour is a dark grey which I stippled onto the rocks using a mix of Codex Grey + Shadow Grey + Chaos Black. Finally, I gave everything a heavy wash of Catachan Green.
