LARGE BASES
When you move up to 40-mm round bases, they open things up a bit for the small-scale landscaper within you. With the added space, you can stretch the limits of your scenic-base skills and try out materials too bulky for use on a 25-mm round base. Heck, you can even have your model placed on top of something other than the base plastic if you plan it out first. Once more, always keep the model in mind when planning out your base. Below are some examples of terrain that one might find in this shattered realm.

ROCKY OUTCROPPINGS

Modelling: I made this base by mixing up a small amount of Green Stuff and piling it onto the base. This layer helps to create a little bit of elevation and mask the flatness of the base. Then, I pressed small pieces of slate (although any old rock type will do) into the Green Stuff at various angles. Next, I covered everything with fine slate and modelling sand. Once I had painted the piece, I applied flock in small patches.
Painting: I painted the sand using the following drybrush progression: Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, Vermin Brown, Vomit Brown, and then Bleached Bone. Then, I painted the rocks with: Shadow Grey + Chaos Black, Shadow Grey, Codex Grey, followed by a wash of Catachan Green.

SHATTERED RUINS

Modelling: To make this sprue, I trimmed a piece from the plastic Ruins of Middle Earth sprue and broke it down to fit onto the base. Then, I chipped and slashed at the ruins with a hobby knife to make it look weathered (Take care when doing this!). Once affixed to the base, I glued fine slate and modelling sand around and over the ruins. Once I had painted the piece, I applied flock and static grass to suggest the structure had collapsed some time ago.
Painting: I painted the sand using the following drybrush progression: Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, Bestial Brown, Graveyard Earth, and then Bleached Bone. Then, I painted the ruins with: Codex Grey + Chaos Black, Codex Grey, Fortress Grey, followed by a wash of Catachan Green.

SNOW-COVERED FOOTHILLS

Modelling: To represent rocky foothills, I placed various densities of gritty sand and pebbles on the base. I arranged a few small twigs and then glued them to the base. Then, I covered everything with fine slate and modelling sand. Once I had painted the piece, I applied modelling snow and static grass in various patches on the base.
Painting: I painted the sand using the following drybrush progression: Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, Vermin Brown, and then Kommando Khaki. Then, I painted the logs with: Scorched Brown, Dark Brown, Vermin Brown, Codex Grey, Bleached Bone, followed by a wash of Catachan Green.

OVERGROWN WILDS

Modelling: Modelling the base is pretty straight forward: I just covered the base with modelling sand and allow it to dry. Once I had painted the piece, I glued clumps of varying coarse turf, static grasses, and modelling flock onto the base to represent the wilds of Arnor.
Painting: I painted the sand using the following drybrush progression: Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, Vermin Brown, and then Bleached Bone. Next, I stippled Catachan Green onto the base.
