SCENERY WORKSHOP FOR THE SCOURING OF THE SHIRE
The oldest Hobbit families prefer to live in Hobbit-holes. These dwellings are literally holes in the ground but are large, spacious, and beautifully decorated. Steve Cumiskey reveals techniques you can use to recreate the stunning Shireling homes from The Fellowship of The Ring.

THE BASIC HOBBIT HOLE
The hillside homes of the Hobbits are some of the most distinctive architectural features of Middle-earth. Wargames terrain, aside from making your games more tactically challenging, can evoke the atmosphere of the world in which the game is set. Hobbit-holes also have the advantage of being easy to construct. They're basically hills with doors and windows added. Here, we show you how to make a Hobbit-hole to add to your terrain collection.
APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS
While you can build your Hobbit-hole any size you like, the Hobbit-hole in this example is 13" long, 7" wide at its widest point, and 2" tall, excluding the height of the chimney.
1 |
Make a base of wood, foamboard, or thick card and then glue two layers of polystyrene to it. Once the glue dries, use a knife to shape the hill. Finally, cut away a recess at the front. |
2 |
Take a sheet of foamboard and place it in the recess. Mark the shape of the hill on the board, and then cut out the shape. |
3 |
Mark the position of the door and window (the window should be big enough to fit a small plastic base) and then cut out holes to accommodate these features. |
4 |
Score lines into a piece of balsa wood to represent planking. |
5 |
Cut a circle from the wood to fit the hole you've already cut for the door. Glue the door in place. |
6 |
Cut a door frame from a sheet of stiff card. |
7 |
Glue the frame in place around the door. |
8 |
Take a round base without a slot and glue pieces of matchstick inside it to represent the window. |
9 |
Glue the window in place. |
10 |
Cut out a second frame from stiff card and glue it in place around the window. |
11 |
Cut two strips from your leftover balsa wood and glue them in place on either side of the door. Take a few more, shorter strips and glue them in place at roughly 45 degrees to the first strips. |
12 |
Glue the front wall in place. |
