Undead Construct
PAINTING THE BONE GIANT

With the release of the Warhammer Armies Tomb Kings book, we thought we'd ask the 'Eavy Metal team how they painted the awesome new Bone Giant. Click on each close-up to see a larger version.

ASSEMBLING THE MODEL
After the model was cleaned up and any mould lines filed off, the arms were pinned to the torso, and then the rest of the figure was assembled. The Bone Giant was then sprayed with an undercoat of Chaos Black and any areas where the paint had failed to catch were touched up with thinned Chaos Black paint.

PAINTING THE MODEL
To get a clean, sun-bleached effect, the bone sections were painted almost white. To achieve this, a basecoat of Bestial Brown was used. This was then highlighted with Snakebite Leather. Bronzed Flesh was used for the next highlight stage, followed by a highlight of Bleached Bone. The final highlights were then made using Skull White. A thinned mix of equal parts Chestnut Ink and Brown Ink was painted into the recesses, and any areas where the ink had spread too far were covered over with Skull White.

The gold had to look old without being overly tarnished. A basecoat of Shining Gold was used first, highlighted at first with Burnished Gold. This was followed by a wash with the same Chestnut and Brown inks mix used on the bone areas (it is a good idea to mix some up in a spare pot if you have one). The edges of the gold were then highlighted with a mix of Burnished Gold and a small amount of Mithril Silver.

FINE DETAIL
To add some variety, the bindings and bandages were painted in a couple of different colours. All of the bandages were painted with Scorched Brown. The edges of some were then painted with a highlight mix of Scorched Brown and Rotting Flesh. The other bandages were highlighted with Bestial Brown, followed by Snakebite Leather and a final highlight with Bronzed Flesh. Both types of bandages were then given a wash with thinned Brown Ink to tie them in with the rest of the model.

The belt was painted with a basecoat mix of equal parts Chaos Black and Codex Grey. This was then highlighted with thin lines of Codex Grey.

FINISHING TOUCHES
To give the stones the appearance of real turquoise (rather than just a flat colour) the following method was used. Hawk Turquoise was used as a basecoat, to which small amounts of Skull White were then added to this for several subtle highlight stages.

The weapons were painted with a basecoat of Brazen Brass. This was highlighted with a mix of Mithril Silver and Brazen Brass. Once the blades had been given their final highlight stage, they were given a wash with thinned Brown Ink.
